Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Understanding Its Significance and Celebrations
Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Narak Chaudas, Kali Chaudas, or Chhoti Diwali, is a significant festival celebrated in India. It falls on the second day of Diwali, marking the victory of good over evil. This year, it will be observed on Thursday, 31st October 2024. The festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi.
Narak Chaturdashi commemorates the defeat of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. This day symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. People decorate their homes with rangoli to ward off evil forces and bring in positive energy.

The legend behind Narak Chaturdashi involves Narakasura, the son of Lord Varaha and Bhudevi. Blessed by Lord Brahma, he could only be killed by Bhudevi. He attacked Lord Krishna and Sathyabama, an incarnation of Bhudevi. Sathyabama killed him, fulfilling Brahma's boon. Before dying, Narakasura wished to be remembered through celebrations with lamps.
Why Narak Chaturdashi is Celebrated
Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated as a day of purification before Diwali. People apply aromatic oil on their heads and bodies before bathing. This ritual symbolises cleansing oneself from negativity and preparing for the festivities ahead.
How Narak Chaturdashi is Celebrated
On this day, people light lamps around their homes to eradicate negative energy and invite positivity. A special lamp is lit in the south corner of the house to honour Lord Yamraj, seeking protection from untimely death. Flowers are offered as part of the rituals.
