New Alliance in Jammu and Kashmir Stirs Political Landscape, Challenging Gupkar Alliance and BJP

In Jammu and Kashmir, the formation of a new political alliance led by Ghulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) is stirring the political landscape. This new coalition aims to be an alternative to both the Gupkar alliance and the BJP. The Gupkar alliance, which includes the National Conference (NC), the PDP, and the Congress, has not yet agreed on how to share seats among themselves. This disagreement makes it unlikely they will come to a consensus soon.

Ghulam Nabi Azad's DPAP is planning to join forces with Altaf Bukhari's Jammu Kashmir Apni Party and Sajjad Lone's Jammu Kashmir People's Party, along with other smaller parties. They are considering presenting joint candidates for all five Lok Sabha seats in the Union Territory. Currently, the National Conference holds all three seats in the Kashmir Valley, while the BJP has won both seats in the Jammu region. Discussions among these parties are still at an early stage, but they are working towards a final decision.

The creation of this third front could pose a significant challenge to the Gupkar alliance, which is already facing difficulties. Many leaders from Gupkar alliance parties have switched to the BJP, Apni Party, and DPAP following political changes in the region. This new coalition could potentially draw votes away from both the Gupkar alliance and the BJP, especially in areas where the BJP has been historically strong.

Within the Gupkar alliance itself, there is disagreement over seat sharing. The National Conference insists on contesting all three seats in the Valley, while the PDP wants the Anantnag seat for its leader Mehbooba Mufti. The Congress also desires a seat in the Valley. With no consensus in sight and limited prospects in Jammu for the PDP and National Conference, competition within this alliance is heating up.

The situation could benefit the BJP, particularly for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat. In 2019, the National Conference narrowly won Anantnag. However, with potential division among opposition votes due to the third front and internal disagreements within the Gupkar alliance, the BJP might see an opportunity to field a candidate who could appeal to a broader voter base.

Meanwhile, in Jammu region's Lok Sabha seats - Jammu and Udhampur - the BJP has established a strong presence. In both 2014 and 2019 elections, their candidates won by significant margins. The evolving political dynamics and formation of a third front could lead to changes in voting patterns in upcoming elections.
