Zelenskyy meets Donald Trump in Miami to discuss a peace framework for the Ukraine Russia conflict, addressing Donbas issues, security guarantees, and economic backing as negotiations continue.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Miami to meet United States President Donald Trump, with both leaders aiming to shape a peace agreement to halt the war between Ukraine and Russia, which is moving toward its fourth year, and to address sensitive territorial questions that have blocked previous efforts.

The meeting is scheduled for early afternoon on Sunday, local time, in the main dining room of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where media will be allowed. Before sitting down with Zelenskyy, Trump said that there had been a direct conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier the same day.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that the call with the Russian leader went well. "I just had a good and very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 P.M. today, with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The meeting will take place in the main dining room of Mar-a-Lago. Press is invited. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Before travelling to the United States, Zelenskyy explained that discussions with Trump would range across military security, long-term economic support and the structure of any peace framework, while also confirming that "territorial issues" would be a key part of the talks, as Ukraine and Russia remain split over the future of the Donbas region.

Zelenskyy used social media on Saturday, local time, to underline Ukraine’s goals for the Miami talks. "Ukraine is willing to do whatever it takes to stop this war. For us, priority number one – or the only priority – is ending the war," Zelensky said in a post on X Saturday (local time) ahead of his meeting with the US President. "We need to be strong at the negotiating table," he wrote, while adding that Russia has demonstrated "a desire to continue the war" with its recent drone attacks on Ukraine.

In recent days, Zelenskyy has said a proposed peace plan is almost finalised, noting earlier this week that it is "90% ready". On Christmas, he spoke with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and the group discussed "certain substantive details". However, Zelensky added that "the weeks ahead may also be intensive."

The Miami talks come after a series of diplomatic contacts, including a meeting between Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, after which Canada announced a fresh assistance package for Ukraine. Zelenskyy also spoke with United Kingdom Prime Minister Kier Starmer, saying both leaders "discussed preparations for the meeting with President Trump" and reviewed "contacts with European partners".

Zelenskyy arrived in Miami on Sunday morning with the intention of closing gaps on territory, security guarantees and economic backing, while Russia and Ukraine continue to disagree over Donbas, and officials on all sides expect detailed negotiations in the coming weeks, according to information shared by Zelenskyy and other leaders, with additional inputs from AP.
