White House's Bold Move: Meeting Pro-Khalistan Groups Hours Before Modi's US Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the US involves crucial talks with President Joe Biden, addressing Khalistan concerns and the transnational repression reporting act.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's three-day visit to the United States is poised to feature high-level discussions with President Joe Biden.

Ahead of Modi's arrival, the White House took a notable step by engaging in dialogue with Sikh representatives, some aligning with the Khalistan movement.

The U.S. authorities reassured them of their safety against transnational threats while on American soil, underscoring the nation's dedication to protecting its inhabitants' rights and freedoms. This interaction is significant against the backdrop of India's concerns regarding the hospitability extended by the U.S. and Canada to individuals associated with the Khalistani separatism, which India vehemently opposes.

The U.S. National Security Council's decision to initiate a meeting with Sikh separatist representatives just before Modi's participation in the Quad summit and the 'Summit of the Future' at the United Nations General Assembly is unprecedented. This encounter, facilitated by the White House, emphasizes the U.S. government's intent to address and possibly mitigate tensions related to the Khalistan movement's supporters within its borders.

Amidst these diplomatic maneuvers, U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff unveiled the 'Transnational Repression Reporting Act 2024'. This legislative proposal aims to meticulously document instances of transnational repression within the United States, reflecting a firm resolve to counteract any infringements on the constitutional rights of Americans. This development aligns with the broader context of the U.S.'s efforts to safeguard its citizens from international aggression and intimidation.

In a related vein, Khalistani activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who resides in the United States, took legal action against the Indian government and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. A U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York responded by issuing summons in a case stemming from an alleged assassination plot against Pannun. Despite Pannun's designation as a terrorist by India and his leadership in the anti-India Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) group, the Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri dismissed the lawsuit as baseless. Pannun, known for his vehement opposition to India and threats against Modi, holds citizenship in both the U.S. and Canada, operating the banned SFJ from New York.

U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, reassured that the legal proceedings involving Pannun would not adversely affect the bilateral relations between India and the U.S. This statement highlights the nuanced approach the U.S. is taking in managing its domestic legal challenges and international diplomatic relations, especially with a pivotal ally like India. The assurance from a high-ranking official like Garcetti underscores the strength and resilience of India-U.S. ties, even in the face of potential controversies stemming from transnational legal issues.
