Who Is Anurag Kumar? Meet The Former IB Special Director Appointed As Delhi Police Commissioner

The Central government has announced IPS Officer Anurag Kumar as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, a senior intelligence officer now has been appointed at the important post of police. A 1994 batch AGMUT cadre officer and ex Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has replace Satish Golcha, who was Delhi Police Commissioner from August 2025. Anurag Kumar's appointment was approved after PM Modi and Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC)'s meeting.

Official Appointment Follows Repatriation from Intelligence Bureau

The Ministry of Home Affairs made the official announcement through an order on Friday, that confirmed Anurag Kumar's appointment with immediate effect. He will take the charge as soon he assume the post.

The order stated, "With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994) is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders."

Just a day before Delhi Police Commissioner appointment, Anurag Kumar got the clearance from ACC to return to AGMUT from Intelligence Burea. Now that gives him the chance to be the top most position in the Delhi Police.

On the other hand, current Commissioner Satish Golcha, from 1992-batch AGMUT Cadre IPS officer has been asked to report direct to LG (Lieutenant Governor) of Delhi after handing over the charge of Anurag Kumar. Earlier, Satish Golcha's tenure was expected to continue till April 2027 but his suddent replace is shocking.

Who Is Anurag Kumar?

IPS Anurag Kumar had experience of 32 years in Police, intelligence and public administration role. He is a Bacherlor of Engineer graduate and he has served at multiple positions in his career. Before joining Intelligence Bureau, he was DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) of Delhi Police in many districts, making his experience of first hand in Delhi.

In his time of Intelligence Bureau, he handeled many critical assignments including national security, counter-terrorism approach to intelligence gathering. This experience will help him to know the importance of security challenges in Delhi.

Anurag Kumar was rewarded with India's highest police service honours, Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.

Key Challenges Await the New Delhi Police Chief

As a new commissioner of Delhi Police, IPS Anurag Kumar will have multiple things to oversee. Delhi Police is assigned to secure the National Capital, which has Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, PM Office, Supreme Court, Foreign Embassies, Central government offices, and many central government events.

From VIP security, Counter Terrorism, Law and Order, Women's Safety to Cybercrime investigations, Amit Kumar will ensure everything runs smoothly in national capital.

The digital crime is raising everyday in all over India, especially it becomes important for Anurag Kumar in Delhi. His one of the responsibilities will be to stop criminal networks taking place as Digital fraud.

Appointment Comes Months After Major Delhi Police Reshuffle

This major appointment came after Delhi went through a major transfers within the capital itself. Around 70 officers, including 50 IPS officer and 20 DANIPS officers transferred to important positions in Delhi on 3 March 2026. These transfers affected multiple units in Delhi, that includes, Crime, Traffic, District police, Security, and their operational works.

Assigning Delhi Police commissioner with the experience of Intelligence is being seen as the important call to make Delhi's security in higher intelligent hands to handle terror activities within the capital itself.
