Van Driver Arrested for Gate Crashes at Irish Prime Minister's Office

A driver was detained early Friday morning in Dublin after crashing his van into gates outside several key government buildings, including the residence of Ireland's president, the prime minister's office, and the parliament building, according to police. Detectives have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

Driver Crashes at Irish Govt Gates

The incidents began around 2 am when government offices were closed, and no injuries were reported. The van first rammed into the fence outside President Michael Higgins' official residence but did not enter the grounds. The driver then travelled approximately 3 miles (5 km) to central Dublin, where the van collided with several gates outside two government building complexes.

Damage to Government Buildings

Pickets in the sturdy iron fence outside Prime Minister Simon Harris' office were bent inward, and the gate was knocked off its hinges outside the attorney general's office. The white van involved in the incidents was towed from the scene.

Louise O'Reilly, a member of parliament for the Sinn Féin party, expressed concern over how these incidents could have occurred. "It's hard to understand how someone was able to carry out these attacks in several locations in this manner," O'Reilly told national broadcaster RTE. "We will be looking to the gardaí to provide us with information as to how this could have unfolded and how someone was able to travel to three separate locations in Dublin city before being apprehended."

Police Investigation

The driver, who is in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving offences. Detectives are questioning him but have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attacks.

The series of incidents has raised questions among lawmakers about security measures around key government buildings. O'Reilly and other lawmakers plan to ask police, known as gardaí, for more information on how these events could have taken place.

The incidents occurred when government offices were closed, which likely contributed to no injuries being reported. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the driver's motives and actions leading up to the crashes.

This series of events highlights potential vulnerabilities in security protocols around important government sites. Lawmakers are keen on understanding how such breaches could occur and what measures can be implemented to prevent future incidents.
