US Warns Of Potential Sanctions For Iran Business Post India-Iran Chabahar Port Deal
Following the signing of an agreement between India and Iran regarding the Chabahar port, it was stated by the United States that anyone engaging in business with Iran is susceptible to potential sanctions.
Wide-ranging sanctions have been imposed on Iran by the US due to its nuclear program, which is suspected of developing nuclear weapons in violation of international treaties. The sanctions have been imposed as a consequence of this.

US Warns Of Potential Sanctions For Iran Business
At a press conference, it was further conveyed by US Department of State Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel that there will be no exemption for India, and the sanctions have the potential to be applicable to all countries engaging with Iran. Patel mentioned that the sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States will continue to be enforced.
In response to a question regarding the Chabahar agreement signed on Monday, it was stated by Patel that it is for the Indian government to address the matter, not the Biden administration.
Patel stated, "I will let the Government of India speak to its own foreign policy goals vis-à-vis the Chabahar port as well as its own bilateral relationship with Iran. I will just say, as it relates to the United States, U.S. sanctions on Iran remain in place and we'll continue to enforce them."
Furthermore, Patel emphasized that all entities considering business deals with Iran "need to be aware of the potential risk that they are opening themselves up to and the potential risk of sanctions."
India-Iran Chabahar Port Deal: Key Details
A deal was signed on Monday between India and Iran for the operation of the Iranian port of Chabahar for a period of 10 years, with a focus on trade with Central Asia. The Chabahar port, originally proposed by India in 2003, is intended to serve as a gateway for Indian goods to reach landlocked Afghanistan and beyond into Central Asia through a network of rail and road projects.
The port is formally known as the Shahid Beheshti Port Terminal.
The agreement was signed between India Port Global Limited (IPGL) and the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) of Iran. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was present in Iran for the signing of the deal. According to a statement by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, the ministerial visit and the signing of the long-term contract will further strengthen ties between the two nations and emphasize the significance of Chabahar as a gateway for trade with Afghanistan and broader Central Asian countries. The development of the Chabahar Port Project is considered a flagship project of India-Iran collaboration.
