US Deploys THAAD Missile Defence System and Troops to Israel Amid Rising Tensions with Iran
The Pentagon announced that the United States will deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) battery to Israel. This move, authorised by Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin under President Joe Biden's direction, includes sending troops to operate the system. The deployment aims to strengthen Israel's air defences following Iran's missile attacks in April and October.

Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, highlighted that this action underscores the US's unwavering commitment to Israel's defence. He stated, "to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran." The decision comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with diplomatic efforts ongoing to prevent a broader conflict.
US Military Presence and Support
The US has maintained a limited military presence in Israel, considering it a crucial regional ally. This includes routine rotational deployments for training purposes. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani of the Israeli army expressed gratitude for US support but did not specify when the THAAD battery would arrive.
In recent developments, Israeli forces have been engaged in clashes with Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon since October 8, 2023. The Lebanese group began launching rockets over the border in support of Hamas in Gaza. In response, Israel initiated a ground invasion into Lebanon late last month.
Iranian Response and Regional Tensions
Iran issued a warning to the US through a post on social media platform X, linked to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The message cautioned against deploying American military forces to Israel. This warning followed reports of the US considering such deployment amid ongoing regional tensions.
President Biden confirmed his agreement to send the THAAD battery during a brief interaction with reporters in Florida. He emphasised that the deployment is intended "to defend Israel." Biden made these remarks at MacDill Air Force Base after assessing Hurricane Milton's damage and meeting with local officials.
THAAD System Capabilities
The THAAD system is designed to complement the Patriot system but offers broader coverage. It can intercept targets at distances ranging from 150 to 200 kilometres (93 to 124 miles). According to an April report by the Congressional Research Service, each THAAD battery typically includes six truck-mounted launchers and requires 95 soldiers for operation.
The US previously deployed a THAAD battery to Israel in 2019 for training purposes. Additionally, after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, the US sent one of its batteries to the Middle East along with extra Patriot battalions to enhance protection for American forces in the region.
Israel is reportedly preparing for a military response following Iran's missile attack on October 1, when approximately 180 missiles were launched into Israeli territory. The delivery of this advanced missile defence system could potentially escalate tensions further despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
