US to Return USD 52.8 Million in Seized Assets Linked to Nigeria's Former Oil Minister

The United States has decided to return USD 52.88 million in seized assets to Nigeria. This move is part of a lengthy corruption investigation involving former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and her associates. The announcement was made through a joint statement by Nigeria's minister of justice and the US government.

US Returns USD 52.8 Million to Nigeria

Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria's oil minister from 2010 to 2015, became a notable figure during President Goodluck Jonathan's tenure. She was also the first female president of OPEC. Despite her achievements, she faced allegations of embezzling millions in public funds with her associates.

Asset Repatriation and Allocation

The assets, including a luxury yacht and prime properties in New York and California, were seized by US authorities in 2023 during Alison-Madueke's trial. This marks the first time assets linked to her have been repatriated. Of the returned funds, USD 50 million will be used for rural electrification projects in Nigeria.

The remaining USD 2.88 million will be granted to the International Institute for Justice. This grant aims to bolster rule of law initiatives and counterterrorism efforts in Nigeria. The allocation reflects a commitment to using recovered assets for public benefit.

Allegations and Denials

Alison-Madueke had promised reforms in the oil sector during her tenure but was accused of corruption. Authorities claim that many assets linked to her were hidden in the US and UK. Despite these accusations, she has consistently denied any involvement in corrupt activities.

Nigeria's anti-corruption agency has obtained court orders to seize properties, vehicles, and jewellery within the country. These items are believed to be proceeds from corruption tied to Alison-Madueke and her network.

This development signifies a significant step in addressing corruption allegations against Alison-Madueke. It also highlights international cooperation in recovering stolen assets and ensuring they are used for developmental purposes in Nigeria.
