United Nations Under-Secretary-General For Peace Operations Praises India

The United Nations has lauded India's peacekeeping mission. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, highlighted India's pivotal role during a media briefing on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

He said India not just a major supporter but as a leader in ensuring that crimes against peacekeepers are met with accountability.

Lacroix's appreciation for India's efforts was evident when he remarked on the nation's distinctive approach towards addressing crimes against peacekeepers. "India's men and women have made remarkable contributions to UN missions. Moreover, India has often taken a leading role in pushing for justice when peacekeepers are harmed. This is extremely commendable," he stated. This recognition comes at a time when India's proactive measures, such as "Operation Sindoor" targeting terrorists, though not formally confirmed in the session, align with its commitment to peacekeeper safety and justice.

India's commitment to enhancing gender equity and inclusion within peacekeeping operations was further underscored by its hosting of the first International Conference on Women in UN Peacekeeping. This event, a collaboration between India's Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, and the Centre for UN Peacekeeping (CUNPK), reflected a "Global South Perspective," emphasizing the country's leadership in shaping the future dynamics of peacekeeping with a focus on including women.

Presently, India ranks as the fourth-largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, with over 5,300 military and police personnel stationed in conflict zones around the world. This contribution not only showcases India's military professionalism but also its strategic intent to be viewed as a responsible global leader. In a world where the geopolitical landscape is ever-shifting, India's commitment to justice and gender-inclusive peacekeeping practices enhances its diplomatic influence and soft power.
