Trump's Inauguration as 47th US President Promises a Golden Age for America

Donald Trump has been inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. Despite facing impeachments, criminal charges, and assassination attempts, he secured another term. The swearing-in ceremony was held indoors due to cold weather and began at noon ET. Prior to this, Trump attended a service at St. John's Episcopal Church. Republicans now have unified control in Washington and aim to reshape national institutions.

Trumps Vision for a Golden Age in America

Trump's second inaugural address differed significantly from his first in 2017. Back then, he spoke about "American Carnage," painting a bleak picture of the nation. This time, his speech was notably shorter, lasting around 30 minutes, unlike his campaign rallies which often exceeded an hour.

Focus on Unity and Future

Country music star Carrie Underwood performed "America the Beautiful" at the inauguration. She expressed her honour in participating in such a historic event, emphasising unity and looking forward. Underwood typically avoids political discussions, stating she prefers to stay out of politics publicly.

During his speech, Trump expressed ambitions for space exploration. He announced plans to send American astronauts to Mars, aiming to plant the US flag there. Elon Musk of SpaceX reacted enthusiastically to this announcement.

Immigration Policy Changes

Trump outlined plans to halt illegal immigration immediately but provided few details on implementation. He intends to end "catch-and-release," where migrants are released in the US while seeking asylum. The "Remain in Mexico" policy will be resumed, requiring asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for US court hearings. The Mexican government has agreed to this policy.

The use of a Bible during the presidential oath is traditional but not mandatory. Theodore Roosevelt did not use one after William McKinley's assassination in 1901. John Quincy Adams opted for a law text in 1825, and Lyndon B. Johnson used a Catholic missal after John Kennedy's assassination in 1963.

Parallel Events in Washington

While Trump was being sworn in, Rev. Al Sharpton led a Martin Luther King Jr. Day service with Black leaders. The event highlighted racial issues and civil rights concerns under Trump's administration. Sharpton introduced Korey Wise from the Central Park Five case and criticised Trump's actions against Black Americans.

The inauguration day saw multiple events reflecting different perspectives on Trump's presidency. Sharpton emphasised ongoing resistance against policies perceived as harmful to civil rights over the next four years.
