Will Trump Assassination Change Things Politically?

"During a phone call with my daughter, emails began streaming in announcing that Trump had been shot", said Katrina Vanden Heuvel. Further, Heuvel stated, "She became emotional, asking in a fearful and trembling voice, "What does this mean for our country?"

What it means, I believe, is that we have entered a moment when more than ever, perspective, context, history, and clarity are needed about the threat of political violence in such charged times, as reported by The Guardian.

Being the victim of a shooting is terrifying. Donald Trump and those wounded and killed deserve our sympathy and concern. The risks that political leaders face in a polarized and heavily armed society like ours should not be forgotten. The shooting at Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, labeled by authorities as an assassination attempt on the former president, resulted in two people critically injured and two killed: a rally attendee and the shooter, as per media reports.

Trump was on his feet immediately, having suffered a wound to his ear. In this era of 24/7 propaganda, the incident swiftly became fodder for campaigns. Trump's reaction was portrayed by Fox News as heroic, symbolizing American strength and courage.

Maga zealots, notably Ohio senator JD Vance, a contender for Trump's vice-presidential nomination, blamed Biden's criticism of Trump for provoking the shooting. Vance disregarded the reality that few have contributed more to the coarsening of our political discourse than Trump, whose rhetoric has increasingly been violent and divisive over time, as reported by The Guardian.

It was Trump who urged Iowans to vote for him and defeat "all of the liars, cheaters, thugs, perverts, frauds, crooks, freaks, creeps," just as he vilified political opponents and immigrants as "vermin." It is not an overstatement to say that Trump has glorified the language of political violence for over a decade. He has framed his campaigns around a narrative of paranoid martyrdom, resonating strongly with his followers during this and previous elections.

Trump Assassination: What should we glean from this tragedy?

First and foremost, we must unequivocally denounce all forms of political violence as unacceptable. President Biden and prominent Democrats who disagree fundamentally with the former president have strongly condemned the shooting.

Hopefully, leaders across the political spectrum will join in these condemnations, as well as condemn the escalating threats of violence directed at public officials, from the president to poll workers to judges and jurors, as reported by The Guardian.

Yet this issue transcends politics and public life. Our nation grapples with pervasive gun violence and an excessive proliferation of firearms. Most victims are neither famous nor powerful. With schoolchildren now forced to participate in active shooter drills, it is imperative for us all to take decisive action to curb gun violence.

However, we must also acknowledge that while condemning political violence, being shot does not elevate the victim or transform them into a moral leader. A presidential campaign is not akin to a WWF wrestling drama. Trump's suitability for the presidency should be assessed - as with any candidate - based on his conduct, character, and policies, as per media reports.

This responsibility remains unchanged despite the attempt on his life. The prospect of a Trump presidency was deeply unsettling before Saturday's shooting and remains so afterward. Given his penchant for spectacle and aggression, and with the Republican convention approaching, Trump is likely to exploit this dangerous moment for political gain. Let no one be deceived. Donald Trump deserves sympathy for the attack he endured. However, this does not make him a viable candidate for the presidency, said Katrina Vanden Heuvel.
