Thai Government Gives Green Light for Visa-Free Travel for Chinese Visitors in Bid to Revive Tourism Industry
In a bid to resuscitate its flagging tourism industry, the new government of Thailand has approved temporary visa-free entry for Chinese tourists. This move indicates that reviving the country's tourism sector is one of its top economic priorities. The measure will also extend to visitors from Kazakhstan and will be effective from September 25 until February 29 next year.
Revitalizing Thailand’s Tourism Industry

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced this decision on Wednesday, emphasizing that all relevant authorities had been consulted in order to ensure readiness for the anticipated influx of travellers. Over a decade ago, China became a major source of tourists for Thailand, with nearly 11 million visitors in 2019 alone; this accounted for an impressive 27.6% of all arrivals in the year preceding the coronavirus pandemic which subsequently crippled global tourism.
The Impact on Thai Economy
The Thai economy experienced severe contraction during the pandemic as its significant tourism industry virtually collapsed under travel restrictions and safety concerns. In comparison, prior to COVID-19 crisis, Thailand welcomed approximately 40 million international visitors in 2019 who generated substantial revenue according to government estimates.
Visa Exemption: A Strategic Move
The government's proposal for visa exemption comes amidst worries that current strict visa requirements might deter Chinese tourists from visiting Thailand thus causing it not meet its initial target of attracting five million Chinese tourists this year. As reported by The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), around only about 1.4 million Chinese tourists visited within first six months of this year - a number significantly lower than pre-pandemic figures.
Conclusion: A Step Towards Recovery?
This strategic move by Thai Government can be seen as an attempt at stimulating recovery following a period characterized by unprecedented economic hardship due to the pandemic. By easing visa requirements for tourists from China and Kazakhstan, Thailand is hoping to attract more visitors and thus boost its tourism industry – a sector that plays an essential role in its economy.
However, it remains to be seen how effective this measure will be given the ongoing global health crisis. While there's potential for increased tourist influx from these countries, uncertainties linked with travel during a pandemic might still pose significant challenges. Nevertheless, this initiative signals Thailand’s determination to revive its tourism sector and can be considered as part of wider efforts by nations worldwide to gradually reopen their borders while grappling with economic recovery post-pandemic.
