Teens ISIS Video Raises Concerns in Zurich Stabbing

Zurich cantonal police security chief Mario Fehr revealed on Monday that authorities are investigating a 15-year-old suspect in the stabbing of an Orthodox Jewish man in Zurich over the weekend. The suspect, who remains unidentified, appeared in a video expressing solidarity with the banned Islamic State (IS) group and referred to himself as a "soldier" in its self-described caliphate.

Authorities Authenticate Video

Fehr confirmed that authorities have authenticated the video, in which the suspect makes references to the IS and identifies himself as a soldier of the caliphate. The stabbing on Saturday has been condemned as a "terrorist" and "antisemitic" attack by Fehr.

Suspect Arrested at the Scene

The suspect was promptly apprehended at the scene of the incident. In one of the videos, Fehr disclosed that the suspect spoke in Arabic and called for a "battle against the Jews."

Victim's Condition and Heightened Security

The 50-year-old victim sustained critical injuries but is now in stable condition. As a precautionary measure, Swiss police have bolstered security around locations with Jewish connections.

Switzerland's Relative Safety

In contrast to other Western European nations, Switzerland has largely been spared from extremist attacks. This is despite the Islamic State group's control over significant territories in Iraq and Syria during the mid-2010s, which attracted radical fighters and others to join its self-described caliphate.

Condemnation of Antisemitism

Jewish leaders, human rights organizations, authorities, and other entities in Switzerland and beyond have strongly condemned the recent surge in antisemitism. This follows the deadly attacks and hostage-takings carried out by Palestinian militants in Israel on October 7.

Israeli Response and Casualties

In response to these attacks, the Israeli government has launched a significant military campaign in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 30,000 people, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
