Starbucks To Pay $50 Million After Hot Drink Burns Delivery Driver
A California jury has ruled that Starbucks must pay $50 million (₹415 crore) in damages to a delivery driver who suffered severe burns after a hot beverage spilled on him at a Los Angeles drive-through. The incident occurred when Michael Garcia was picking up an order, and the drink slipped, causing serious injuries.
According to a lawsuit filed in California Superior Court in 2020, the hot liquid spilled onto Garcia's lap, resulting in severe burns, disfigurement, and nerve damage to his genitals. The suit accused Starbucks of negligence, alleging that the company failed to properly secure the lid on the drink, which led to the accident. Garcia's legal team argued that the injuries had a lasting impact on his physical and emotional well-being, affecting his quality of life.

Garcia's attorney, Michael Parker, explained that his client was retrieving three drinks when one of them wasn't fully placed into the drink carrier. As the barista handed over the order, the unstable cup slipped, causing the scalding liquid to spill onto Garcia.
The jury awarded Garcia compensation for his physical suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and psychological trauma. The ruling was recorded by Courtroom View Network, which documented the proceedings.
Starbucks, however, has expressed disagreement with the verdict and intends to challenge the ruling. A company spokesperson stated, "We sympathize with Mr. Garcia, but we do not agree with the jury's decision and believe the damages awarded are excessive. We remain committed to the highest safety standards, including careful handling of hot beverages."
The case has drawn comparisons to the infamous 1994 lawsuit against McDonald's, in which Stella Liebeck sustained third-degree burns after spilling hot coffee on herself. That case initially resulted in nearly $3 million in damages, sparking debates about corporate responsibility and product safety.
As Starbucks prepares to appeal the ruling, the case highlights the importance of safety measures in the food and beverage industry, as well as the legal consequences companies may face when such standards are allegedly not met.
