Russia Turns to North Korea, Iran for Ballistic Missiles in Ukraine War
US intelligence discloses Russias acquisition of ballistic missiles from North Korea and its pursuit of close-range missiles from Iran, raising concerns about Moscows reliance on foreign arms in the Ukraine war.
Amidst its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, Russia has turned to North Korea and Iran to replenish its dwindling arms supplies, according to intelligence findings declassified by the White House. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby revealed that North Korea has supplied Russia with ballistic missile launchers and several ballistic missiles, one of which was fired into Ukraine on December 30, landing in the Zaporizhzhia region.

North Korea's Assistance to Russia
The intelligence suggests that Russia has launched multiple North Korean ballistic missiles, with the most recent attack occurring on Tuesday. Kirby expressed concern over Russia's ongoing negotiations with Iran to acquire close-range ballistic missiles, indicating that these negotiations are actively progressing.
The Biden Administration's Concerns
The Biden administration has consistently emphasized Russia's reliance on North Korea and Iran for arms to sustain its war against Ukraine. These findings highlight the growing isolation of North Korea and Iran on the international stage due to their nuclear programs and human rights records.
Historical Ties Between Russia and North Korea
Russia and North Korea have a long-standing relationship dating back to the foundation of North Korea in 1948. Soviet officials played a crucial role in installing Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un, as the country's first ruler. Soviet aid shipments were instrumental in sustaining North Korea's economy until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. In September 2022, Kim visited Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin and tour key military sites.
Iran's Involvement
In addition to North Korea, the Biden administration has also accused Iran of providing Russia with attack drones. These revelations underscore the growing international concerns over Russia's reliance on external sources for weaponry and the potential implications for regional stability.
As Russia continues to face challenges in replenishing its arms supplies, its reliance on North Korea and Iran raises concerns about the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical implications. The international community will closely monitor developments in this situation and its potential impact on regional and global security.
