Palestinian American Woman Asks for Prayers After Son's Hate Crime Death in Chicago

A Palestinian American woman asks the public to pray for peace after her 6-year-old son is killed in a hate crime attack. She urges authorities to take action against rising hostility towards Muslims and Palestinians.

In a heart-wrenching appeal from Chicago, Hanaan Shahin, a Palestinian American woman whose 6-year-old son was brutally killed in what police are calling a hate crime, has urged the public to "pray for peace". This plea comes as she is recovering from her own injuries sustained during the horrific incident that took place in a Chicago suburb.

hate crime death

Hanaan Shahin issued her statement on Tuesday through the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), following a meeting with their executive director. This marked her first public comments since the gruesome attack on October 14th which left her with more than a dozen stab wounds and stitches on her face. Authorities believe that their suburban Chicago landlord targeted them due to their Islamic faith and as an adverse reaction to escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas.

A Plea for Peace

"Pray for peace," implored Shahin, expressing gratitude towards authorities, doctors and others who have supported her throughout this ordeal. She was released from hospital last week but has declined interviews with reporters. The tragic loss of Wadea Al-Fayoume, Shahin's son who died in the attack, has amplified fears about rising hostility against Muslims and Palestinians in America.

Rising Hostility Against Muslims

This fear is not unfounded; just within Illinois alone over the past week there have been several incidents of anti-Muslim violence. A man from one of its suburbs was charged with committing hate crimes after assaulting two Muslims while an Islamic day school had to cancel classes due to receiving threats.

The Accused Faces Court

The accused attacker in this case is Joseph Czuba, aged 71. He faces charges including murder, attempted murder and hate crimes, and is due to appear in court next week. Czuba's attorney, George Lenard, issued a statement last week through the Will County Public Defenders Office stating that he would not be commenting on the case beyond "what is presented in the courtroom."

Remembering Wadea

Shahin, who was still hospitalized during her son's funeral, remembered him as an intelligent and funny child who cared deeply about the planet and liked joining her in prayers. She expressed comfort in remembering him as an angel on earth and knowing that he is now an angel in heaven. In her words: "He was my best friend."

In conclusion, this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of rising religious intolerance and hate crimes globally. It underlines the urgent need for society to foster peace, acceptance and mutual respect among diverse communities. Shahin’s plea for peace echoes far beyond Chicago; it resonates with all those who believe in humanity's capacity for compassion over hatred.
