Netherlands King and Queen Pay Homage to MLK in Atlanta, Reflect on Civil Rights
The king and queen of the Netherlands, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, embarked on a significant four-day tour of the US, starting in Atlanta on Monday. Their visit began with a poignant tribute to the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., highlighting the ongoing dialogue around civil rights and the fight against racism. This visit holds particular resonance as it follows King Willem-Alexander's heartfelt apology for the Netherlands' historical involvement in slavery, made during a speech in Amsterdam.

At the heart of their Atlanta visit was a stop at The King Center, where they were welcomed by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter, Bernice King. The royal couple laid a wreath at the marble crypt of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, marking a moment of deep reflection on the civil rights movement's legacy. Civil rights leader and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young was also present, underscoring the visit's significance.
King Willem-Alexander expressed how deeply moving the visit was for them, acknowledging the shared struggle against discrimination and racism that continues both in the United States and the Netherlands. He emphasized Martin Luther King's enduring inspiration across continents in the pursuit of peace and reconciliation.
The royal couple's itinerary also included engaging with Black students at Ebenezer Baptist Church to learn more about its pivotal role in the civil rights movement. Their tour is set to continue with a visit to Savannah State University, Georgia's oldest public historically Black college or university, highlighting education's role in advancing racial justice.
Beyond its cultural and historical significance, the visit also serves an economic purpose. The king and queen met with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Dutch business leaders to discuss economic cooperation between Georgia and the Netherlands. With trade between Georgia and the Netherlands totaling $2.9 billion in 2023, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, these discussions are crucial for furthering bilateral economic ties.
The royal couple's schedule includes attending the opening of a new cold storage facility by Dutch company NewCold and visiting the Port of Savannah, showcasing the diverse aspects of their US tour. The trip will conclude with a visit to New York, emphasizing the multifaceted relationship between the Netherlands and the United States.
This tour not only underscores the historical connections and shared values between the two nations but also highlights ongoing efforts to foster economic collaboration and mutual understanding in today's global landscape.
