Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To Jailed Iranian Activist Narges Mohammadi
Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the oppression of women in her country and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all, the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Friday said.
"2023 #NobelPeacePrize laureate Narges Mohammadi's brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. The Iranian regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Mohammadi is still in prison," the Swedish Academy said on X.

Narges Mohammadi has made a lot of personal sacrifices in her relentless fight for freedom of expression and the right to independence. The Iranian regime has arrested her on 13 occasions, subjected her to five convictions, and imposed a total sentence of 31 years in prison along with 154 lashes.
Regrettably, Narges Mohammadi remains in prison today.

After her release on bail, Mohammadi engaged herself in a campaign against the use of the death penalty. Her activism against the death penalty led to her re-arrest in 2015, and to a sentence of additional years behind walls, the academy stated.
"Last year's wave of protests became known to the political prisoners held inside the notorious Evin prison in Tehran. From captivity, 2023 #NobelPeacePrize laureate Mohammadi has helped to ensure that the protests have not ebbed out," the message from the academy read.
"This year's peace prize also recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who, in the preceding year, have demonstrated against Iran's theocratic regime's policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women," the committee added.
