More Than 2,00,000 Indians Gave Up Citizenship In 2024: Modi Govt Tells Parliament

In 2024, over two lakh Indians chose to renounce their citizenship, as informed by the government in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, provided this information in response to questions regarding the number of Indians who have given up their citizenship over the past five years.

Singh detailed that 85,256 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2020, followed by 1,63,370 in 2021. The numbers increased to 2,25,620 in 2022 and slightly decreased to 2,16,219 in 2023. In 2024, the figure stood at 2,06,378. These statistics highlight a trend of increasing numbers over recent years.

Indian Diaspora's Influence

The government acknowledges the value of a successful diaspora. A thriving Indian community abroad is seen as an asset due to its potential networks and influence. This perspective aligns with India's strategy to engage more effectively with its global diaspora.

The reasons behind individuals choosing foreign citizenship are personal and specific to each individual. The government has not specified these reasons but recognises that they vary widely among those who make such decisions.

Engagement with Overseas Indians

Efforts are being made by the government to harness the potential of overseas Indians fully. This includes sharing knowledge and expertise with them. Such initiatives aim to strengthen ties and benefit from the skills and experiences of Indians living abroad.

According to available data, there are currently 3,43,56,193 overseas Indians. Among them are 1,71,81,071 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 1,71,75,122 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). These figures reflect a significant presence of Indians globally.

In earlier years like 2011 and 2012, the numbers were slightly lower at around 1.22 lakh and 1.20 lakh respectively. The trend shows a gradual increase over time as more individuals opt for foreign citizenship.
