Modi-Widodo: The two men who crushed dynasties in their respective countries
There
are
several
similarities
between
Joko
Widodo
and
Narendra
Modi.
Prime
Minister
Narendra
Modi
is
visiting
Jakarta
in
Indonesia
and
the
meeting
with
President
Widodo.
Interestingly
both
the
leaders
come
from
very
humble
backgrounds.
Widodo's
father
was
a
carpenter.
Both the leaders got elected in 2014 and they came to power by trouncing two powerful dynasties. While Modi trounced the Gandhi dynasty in 2014, Widodo on the other hand defeated Prabowo Subianto in the same year.
Modi prior to the election in 2014 was a rank outsider in New Delhi. In the case of Widodo , he became the first president to come from outside the political elite and the military.
Prabowo on the other hand has strong ties to Indonesia's dynastic families. His father served as a minister under former ruler Sukarno and dictator Suharto, and was a chief architect of Indonesian economic policy in the late 1960s. Prabowo was married to a daughter of Suharto.
Prabowo will take on Widodo in the 2019 polls. He had recently accepted his party's nomination to challenge Widodo. A national convention of the members picked Subianto as the presidential candidate.
