Militia Attack Near Congo's Capital Leaves 72 Dead in Land Dispute
At least 72 individuals, including nine soldiers and a soldier's wife, were killed in an attack on a village in western Congo. Local authorities reported that armed men targeted the village of Kinsele, located approximately 100 kilometres east of Kinshasa, the capital. The incident occurred on Saturday amidst escalating violence between rival communities.

The Mobondo militia, which claims to defend the Yaka people, was responsible for the attack. David Bisaka, the provincial deputy for Kwamouth territory, stated that the search for more bodies continues in the bush. He also mentioned that the army had successfully repelled this militia for the second time within a week.
Conflict Between Teke and Yaka Communities
The conflict in Kwamouth territory has been ongoing since June 2022. It involves disputes over land and customary claims between "native" and "non-native" communities. The Teke, who are historical inhabitants of the region, have clashed with farmers from various ethnic groups, including the Yaka, who settled near the Congo River more recently.
Despite a cease-fire agreement in April 2024 attended by Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi, clashes have persisted and even intensified recently. The head of a nearby village, Stanys Liby, informed UN-funded Radio Okapi that nine soldiers and a soldier's wife were among those killed in Saturday's attack.
Government Response to Ongoing Violence
Congo's Defence Minister Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita visited Kwango province on Monday to assess the situation firsthand. The ministry shared on social media platform X that Kwango is considered the last security barrier before reaching Kinshasa. The minister vowed to exert all efforts against the militia.
The Mobondo militia initially attempted to attack Kinsele on Friday but was repelled. However, they returned on Saturday with deadly consequences. The region's insecurity and poor infrastructure often delay reports of such attacks.
Wider Implications of Regional Violence
Congo's army faces challenges containing widespread violence in the country's east. This area has experienced decades of conflict involving government forces and over 120 armed groups vying for control over gold and other resources. Violence in eastern Congo has escalated in recent months.
Earlier this month, a militia attack on a gold mine in northeastern Congo resulted in the deaths of six Chinese miners and two Congolese soldiers. The ongoing violence underscores the complex security challenges facing Congo as it grapples with multiple armed groups across its vast territory.
The situation remains tense as authorities continue their efforts to restore peace and stability in affected regions.
