Mauritania's Ghazouani Secures Reelection, Aims for Stability and Growth

Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has secured a second term, according to the country's electoral commission. Ghazouani, who focused his campaign on security and economic growth, received 56.1% of the votes. His main opponent, Biram Dah Abeid, an anti-slavery activist, garnered 22.1% of the votes and has rejected the results as fraudulent.

Ghazouani Wins Second Term

The voter turnout was reported at 55% of the two million eligible voters. The constitutional court will now review the vote numbers and announce the final results, though the timeline for this remains uncertain. Observers noted that Saturday's vote proceeded without incident.

Electoral Commission's Role

Taghioullah Ledhem, spokesman for CENI, the independent electoral commission, stated, "Nothing has been detected so far and the CENI has not received any complaints." However, some opposition candidates have accused the commission of colluding with Ghazouani's regime. The commission comprises representatives from political parties and its president is appointed by the government.

Abeid claimed he was the true winner and described the provisional results as an "electoral coup d'état" favouring Ghazouani. He accused the electoral commission of fraudulently awarding thousands of votes to Ghazouani. Speaking from his home in Riadh, a poor suburb of the capital, he called for civil disobedience and urged military and security forces not to support the government against the people.

Economic Challenges

Mauritania is rich in natural resources such as iron ore, copper, zinc, phosphate, gold, oil, and natural gas. The country is expected to become a gas producer by year-end with the launch of BP-operated Greater Tortue Ahmeyin offshore gas project on the border with Senegal. Despite this wealth, nearly 60% of Mauritanians live in poverty according to United Nations data.

Many young people face limited economic opportunities at home and are attempting to migrate to Europe or even reach the United States through Mexico. This migration trend highlights the urgent need for economic reforms and job creation within Mauritania.

Regional Stability

The election took place amid regional instability marked by military coups and jihadi violence in neighbouring countries. Despite accusations of corruption and mismanagement from his opponents, Ghazouani remains popular among Mauritanians who view him as a stabilising figure.

The African Union sent an observation mission to monitor Saturday's vote but has yet to release their statement on the election process. The peaceful conduct of the vote is seen as a positive sign amidst regional turmoil.

Abeid remains defiant despite the provisional results. "The battle is not over; we are not defeated," he said. "The people are not defeated and will not be defeated; we are here to defend them until the last drop of blood."

The outcome of this election will be closely watched both domestically and internationally as Mauritania navigates its political future amidst significant economic challenges and regional instability.
