Man Charged with Burning American Flag During Protests Against Netanyahu's Address to Congress

Federal authorities have charged Michael Snow Jr., a 24-year-old from Durham, North Carolina, with the destruction of federal property. This charge stems from an incident where he allegedly burned an American flag during protests in Washington, D.C. The demonstration took place in July, coinciding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to Congress.

Charges Filed for Burning American Flag in Protest

During the protest, demonstrators gathered outside Union Station and pulled down an American flag at Columbus Circle. Authorities claim that video footage shows Snow initially struggling to ignite the flag, exclaiming, "I need a better lighter!" before someone handed him lighter fluid. He then used it to set the flag ablaze with another individual.

Protests Against Netanyahu's Speech

The protest was part of a larger demonstration against Netanyahu's speech, where he vowed to achieve "total victory" over Hamas. Thousands of protesters had converged on Washington to voice their opposition. Outside Union Station, some protesters replaced American flags with Palestinian ones and spray-painted graffiti on a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus.

Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, stated, "Stealing a federal flag and burning it is not speech; it's destruction of federal property." As of now, there is no lawyer listed for Snow in court records, and attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful.

Permit Revocation and Cleanup Costs

A group had obtained a permit to demonstrate at Union Station. However, the U.S. Park Police revoked this permit after being unable to contact the protest organisers that afternoon. The National Park Service reported that cleaning up and repairing the damage caused by the protests cost over USD 11,000.

The protests highlighted tensions surrounding Netanyahu's visit and his stance on Gaza. The incident involving the flag burning has added legal consequences for those involved, as authorities continue to address the actions taken during these demonstrations.
