Dalai Lama Biography 'Eternal Light' to Open for Pre-Booking on July 6

Pre-booking for a new biography on His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will begin on July 6, coinciding with the Tibetan spiritual leader's 91st birthday.

Published by Westland Books, Eternal Light: The Life and Legacy of the 14th Dalai Lama is authored by senior journalist Dr Arvind Yadav and is slated for release on July 30. The publisher said the book has been published with the Dalai Lama's blessings.

The biography traces the Dalai Lama's journey from his birth in Taktser village in Tibet in 1935 to his emergence as one of the world's best-known spiritual leaders. It also examines key moments in Tibet's modern history, including the Chinese occupation, the Tibetan exile movement and efforts to preserve the region's cultural and religious identity.

Among the events covered are his recognition as the 14th Dalai Lama, his enthronement at the Potala Palace in 1940, meetings with India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai during his 1956 visit to India, and the years leading up to his exile in 1959.

The book also looks at the Dalai Lama's international campaign for Tibet, including the Five-Point Peace Plan he presented before members of the US Congress in 1987. The proposal called for Tibet to become a zone of peace, respect for human rights, protection of the environment and dialogue between Tibetan and Chinese representatives.

In a message shared by the publisher, the Dalai Lama said he hoped the biography would give readers a better understanding of Tibet's history and the challenges faced by its people.

"I am grateful for his efforts in making this biography available in English, Hindi, and Telugu. This allows more readers to gain insight into Tibetan history. It also sheds light on the ongoing challenges our people face. Most importantly, it shares the message I have always sought to spread - one of love, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, kindness, and the oneness of humanity.

"It is my hope that this book will serve as an inspiration to all who seek to cultivate a more compassionate and peaceful world," he said.

Dr Yadav said the biography includes lesser-known aspects of the Dalai Lama's life alongside accounts of major events that shaped Tibet's recent history.

Westland Books publisher and editor Minakshi Thakur said the book revisits the Dalai Lama's early years while placing several historical events in a broader context.

The biography will be available for pre-booking from July 6 through major online and offline bookstores before its release later this month.
