Luna-25 Crashes: What Does It Mean For Russia?

Russia's robot lander the Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon after it had spun into uncontrolled orbit, the country's space agency Roscosmos said on Sunday.

A statement from Roscosmos said, "The apparatus moved into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the moon,"

On Saturday, Roscosmos announced the loss of communication with the spacecraft. This occurred when the spacecraft encountered difficulties while transitioning into its pre-landing orbit. Prior to this, the spacecraft had reported an "abnormal situation," which is currently under analysis by their specialists.

"During the operation, an abnormal situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters," Roscosmos said in a Telegram post.

This failure underscores the pressure on Russia's $2 trillion economy and its high-technology sectors as it struggles to navigate Western sanctions aimed at punishing Moscow for trying to invade Ukraine.

The sanctions levied against Russia following its incursion into Ukraine have created obstacles to the country's ability to obtain Western technology, directly affecting its space program.

The spaceport was a pet project of Russia and President Vladimir Putin, who dreamt of making Russia a space superpower.

The setback in the prestigious mission highlights Russia's waning influence in space exploration since the heyday of Cold War rivalry. During that era, Moscow achieved significant milestones such as launching the pioneering satellite Sputnik 1 into Earth's orbit in 1957 and sending Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as the first human to venture into space in 1961.

In the last three decades, Kremlin has contemplated numerous lunar missions. However, these plans were often postponed or abandoned due to the tumultuous events surrounding the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, accompanied by subsequent economic and political instability.

The unsuccessful 2011 Fobos-Grunt mission, intended for one of Mars' moons, highlighted the difficulties encountered by Russia's space program. This mission failed to escape Earth's orbit, ultimately reentering the atmosphere and crashing into the Pacific Ocean in 2012. Eventually, in the early 2010s, Russia settled upon the idea of the Luna-25 mission to the south pole of the moon.
