Lucknow Gets ₹550 Crore Power Upgrade Plan, 7 New Substations And 100 Feeders To Boost Supply

Lucknow's electricity consumers may soon see a significant improvement in power supply as authorities prepare a ₹550 crore infrastructure upgrade plan for Old Lucknow. Designed under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the project aims to strengthen the city's electricity network and meet growing power demand until 2031. Officials say the initiative will benefit nearly 10 lakh residents by reducing power cuts, low-voltage issues and feeder overloading.

Old Lucknow will receive a ₹550 crore infrastructure upgrade under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), including seven new substations and 100 feeders, to enhance power supply reliability for nearly 10 lakh residents until 2031.

What Does The ₹550 Crore Electricity Upgrade Include?

The large-scale project focuses on expanding power infrastructure across several parts of Lucknow. Under the plan, seven new electricity substations and one new power transmission substation will be constructed.

The project also includes the creation of 100 new feeders, which will help distribute electricity more efficiently and reduce stress on the existing network. Authorities expect these measures to improve supply reliability across densely populated neighbourhoods.

Where Will The New Substations Be Built?

The new substations will be developed in areas covered by LESA's Lucknow Central Zone, including Rajajipuram, Uptron, Aishbagh, Thakurganj, Chowk, Residency, Raj Bhavan, Hussainganj and Aminabad.

Two substations are proposed in Talkatora, while one each will be established in Aishbagh, Malpur (Rajajipuram), Rajendra Nagar, Arjunganj and Balaganj. Each facility will have a capacity of 20 MVA, allowing the network to handle increasing electricity demand in the coming years.

How Will Existing Infrastructure Be Improved?

Alongside new projects, the electricity department plans to modernise the existing network. The capacity of power transformers at 11 substations will be enhanced to improve efficiency and accommodate higher loads.

These substations include Hariharpur, Arjunganj, Jawahar Bhavan, Hanuman Setu, UPIL, Noorbari, Uptron, RDSO, Aishbagh, Vidhan Sabha Marg and Balaganj.

New 33 KV and 11 KV transmission lines will also be laid, while insulated conductors will be used for new low-tension lines to improve safety and reduce technical losses.

How Will 100 New Feeders Benefit Consumers?

Officials believe the addition of 100 new feeders will play a crucial role in addressing overloading issues that often lead to voltage fluctuations and supply interruptions.

Of the total, 70 feeders will be connected to the seven new substations, while 30 additional feeders will be added to existing substations. The proposed transmission substation at Talkatora will also provide new power lines to 14 substations.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce power cuts, improve voltage levels and ensure a more stable electricity supply. Residents who currently struggle with low voltage and frequent outages are likely to experience better and more reliable service.

What Have Officials Said About The Project?

Lucknow Central Chief Engineer Ravi Agrawal said the proposal is being prepared under the RDSS scheme with a long-term focus on improving electricity supply in Old Lucknow.

"Under the RDSS scheme, seven new electricity substations will be constructed in Old Lucknow to ensure better power supply up to 2031. In addition, the capacity of power transformers at 11 substations will be enhanced, and 100 new feeders will be created. The proposal will soon be sent to Madhyanchal Vidyut Nigam for approval," he said.

After receiving the necessary approvals, the project is expected to move into the implementation phase, bringing major relief to consumers across several parts of the city.
