‘Ludicrous’: India Refutes Allegations Of Conspiracy In Nijjar Case Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has vociferously refuted allegations stemming from a Canadian report suggesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's awareness of a conspiracy to assassinate Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan activist, in Canada.
Such accusations were deemed "ludicrous" by the MEA, highlighting the detrimental impact on the already tense diplomatic relationship between the two nations. Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA Official Spokesperson, emphasized the baselessness of these claims, stating that they serve only to further erode the bilateral ties.
"Smear campaigns like this only further damage our already strained ties," Jaiswal remarked, firmly rejecting the validity of the Canadian report.
The controversy ignited by these allegations has led to a sharp deterioration in India-Canada relations, with both nations engaging in reciprocal diplomatic actions. Following the emergence of the accusations, India recalled six of its diplomats, including High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, and expelled several Canadian diplomats.
This was a direct response to what India labeled as "preposterous" accusations, underscoring a lack of credible evidence provided by Canada to substantiate its claims. The Indian government has accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of engaging in "vote bank politics," suggesting that the allegations are politically motivated rather than based on factual evidence.
The MEA has denounced these actions as a calculated attempt to tarnish India's reputation for political advantage.

In the wake of these developments, the diplomatic rift between India and Canada has widened, with India criticizing Canada for not taking action against separatist factions operating within its borders. Conversely, Canada has persisted in implicating India in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The exchange of diplomatic blows marks a significant escalation in tensions, underscoring the complex dynamics at play between the two nations over this contentious issue.
Adding to the furor, Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison openly accused India's Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating a strategy of violence, intimidation, and surveillance aimed at Sikh separatists in Canada. Morrison's allegations, confirmed in statements to The Washington Post, have added a layer of international scrutiny to the case, implicating high-ranking Indian officials in a campaign against separatist activities abroad.
The Globe and Mail's report, which has fueled this diplomatic standoff, cited anonymous Canadian officials linking Nijjar's killing directly to Amit Shah, and suggested that key figures like National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were involved in discussions about the operation. The report posited that it would be implausible for such senior officials to act without Modi's knowledge, despite Canada's admission of lacking direct evidence against Modi. This assertion has been sharply criticized by India, which demands legal and credible evidence to support any dialogue on the matter.
Sanjay Kumar Verma, in an interview with CTV before his withdrawal, lamented the absence of any credible evidence from Canadian authorities that could facilitate a constructive dialogue between the two nations. Verma dismissed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) allegations as both premeditated and politically driven, noting the lack of actionable evidence to back the claims against Indian officials. This standoff reflects deep-seated issues in the diplomatic engagement between India and Canada, with both sides holding firm to their positions amidst escalating tensions.
In conclusion, the altercation over Hardeep Singh Nijjar's assassination has led to a significant fallout between India and Canada, highlighting deeper issues in their diplomatic relations. Accusations and counter-accusations have marked a period of heightened tension, with both nations taking decisive actions that reflect the seriousness of the allegations at hand. This diplomatic impasse underscores the challenges in managing bilateral relations amidst accusations of political maneuvering and the complexities of international diplomacy.
