Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin Released from Hospital After Prostate Cancer Surgery
Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to work soon.
Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin was discharged from the hospital on Monday, January 15, after undergoing two weeks of treatment for complications from prostate cancer surgery. Austin, 70, had kept his cancer diagnosis and surgery a secret from senior Biden administration leaders and staff for several weeks.
Austin's Hospitalization and Recovery
Austin was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre on December 22, 2022, for surgery to treat prostate cancer detected during a routine screening earlier that month. He developed an infection a week later and was hospitalized again on January 1, requiring intensive care.
According to Dr. John Maddox, the trauma medical director, and Dr. Gregory Chesnut, the director of the Centre for Prostate Disease Research at Walter Reed, Austin underwent medical tests and received treatment for lingering leg pain during his hospitalization. He will continue with physical therapy, but no further cancer treatment is planned beyond regular check-ups.
Secrecy and Criticism
Austin's decision to keep his cancer diagnosis and hospitalization a secret until January 9 drew criticism from both within the administration and from Congress. President Joe Biden called it a "lapse in judgment" but expressed continued confidence in his Pentagon chief.
The lack of transparency about Austin's condition prompted reviews by the administration and the Defence Department on the procedures for notifying the White House and others when a Cabinet member transfers decision-making authorities to a deputy, as Austin did during his surgery and part of his recent hospital stay. The White House chief of staff has also ordered Cabinet members to inform his office if they are unable to perform their duties.
Congressional Scrutiny and Calls for Resignation
Austin's secrecy also drew criticism from members of Congress from both parties. Representative Mike Rogers, an Alabama Republican and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has opened a formal inquiry into the matter. Some lawmakers have even called for Austin's resignation, but the White House has reaffirmed its support for the Pentagon chief.
Impact on Austin's Role and Future
It remains uncertain when Austin will return to his office at the Pentagon and how his cancer treatment will affect his job, travel, and public engagements going forward. Deputy Defence Secretary Kathleen Hicks has been handling some of his day-to-day responsibilities during his recovery.
The Defence Secretary's recent health challenges have raised questions about transparency and accountability within the Biden administration. While Austin's prognosis is positive, the episode has highlighted the need for clear communication and adherence to established protocols regarding the health and decision-making capacity of top government officials.
