Lloyd Austin Issues Apology Over Covert Hospital Stay: What's Behind The Secrecy?

An apology has been issued by US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, expressing regret for not notifying the chain of command when he was covertly admitted to a hospital in December.

Released earlier this month as he continues recovery from prostate cancer treatment, he acknowledged, "This was not handled correctly, and the president should have been informed about my cancer diagnosis."

Lloyd Austin Issues an Apology

A moment's notice for handling any national security crisis is expected from Pentagon chiefs. A full responsibility acknowledgement and apology to teammates and the American people were expressed by Austin at a news conference on Thursday, marking his first day back at work, reported BBC.

Conversations with his boss are generally not discussed, but it was conveyed that a direct apology to President Biden had been made. Deep regret for not immediately informing President Biden about receiving a significant diagnosis and undergoing treatment was conveyed.

There is no indication that Austin had directed anyone in his staff to conceal his time in the hospital from the White House or the public. In the chain of command for the US military, the defence secretary, regarded as one of the most crucial members of the Cabinet, is just below the president, as reported by BBC.

Prostate cancer surgery was undergone in late December, and due to complications related to the procedure, he was readmitted to the hospital on New Year's Day. It was revealed three days after his re-admission that senior defence officials and the White House had not been informed of the seriousness of Austin's illness.

President Biden has expressed confidence in his secretary's leadership, despite considering it "sub-optimal" that the severity of the illness had not been disclosed, according to BBC.
