Jose Mujica Discusses His Cancer Diagnosis and Decision to Forgo Treatment in Final Interview

José Mujica, Uruguay's former president and ex-guerilla leader, revealed that his esophageal cancer has spread to his liver. He has decided against further treatment. In what he described as his final interview with Busqueda, a Uruguayan weekly magazine, Mujica expressed acceptance of his fate. "Honestly, I am dying," he stated, visibly emotional. He requested privacy, saying, "My cycle is over."

Jose Mujicas Cancer Diagnosis and Farewell

Mujica, affectionately known as "Pepe," gained prominence as a leader of the Marxist militant group Tupamaros, inspired by the Cuban revolution. As Uruguay's 40th president from 2010 to 2015, he implemented significant social reforms. These included legalising abortion, same-sex marriage, and recreational marijuana. His modest lifestyle and charitable donations made him a leftist icon.

Health Challenges and Political Influence

In April last year, Mujica disclosed that doctors had discovered a cancerous tumour in his esophagus. After undergoing radiotherapy, the cancer seemed to be in remission by September. However, the treatment left him weak and with difficulty eating. Despite these challenges, he campaigned for his Broad Front coalition in national elections last autumn.

Mujica's chosen successor, Yamandú Orsi, won the presidency last November and will assume office on March 1. In his interview with Busqueda, Mujica cited his autoimmune disease and severe kidney issues as reasons for not continuing treatment after learning of the cancer's return and metastasis. "I'm an old man," he explained.

Medical Condition and Personal Reflections

Raquel Pannone, Mujica's personal doctor, held a press conference to discuss his health. She noted that treatment options were limited due to his existing health conditions. "He should continue like this and be as calm as possible," she advised without elaborating on his prognosis. Pannone confirmed that Mujica had not experienced changes in daily life or pain levels.

Although Mujica retired from politics in 2020 after leaving the Senate, he remains influential within the Broad Front and is one of Uruguay's most popular politicians. He plans to spend his remaining time at his farm near Montevideo with his wife, where they have cultivated chrysanthemums for years.

Legacy and Philosophical Insights

In the interview, Mujica expressed a desire to bid farewell to his fellow citizens. Supporters across Latin America shared messages of encouragement on social media. Known for his straightforward wisdom, Mujica offered philosophical reflections during the interview: "Life is a beautiful adventure and a miracle," he said. "We are too focused on wealth and not on happiness."

Mujica's decision to focus on personal peace reflects his lifelong dedication to simplicity and contentment over material pursuits. His legacy as a transformative leader endures through both policy achievements and personal philosophy.
