Israel's Cabinet Postpones Key Vote For Ceasefire In Gaza To January 18

Israel's cabinet has delayed a crucial vote on the Gaza ceasefire and hostage agreement until Saturday. A smaller security cabinet will convene on Friday to cast their votes. The full cabinet meeting was initially set for Thursday but has been rescheduled, according to CNN.

Opposition Leader's Assurance

Yair Lapid, the opposition leader, addressed a coalition party's threat to exit the government if the deal is approved. In a translated post on X, he urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to be intimidated, assuring him of support for the hostage deal. "This is more important than any disagreement we've ever had," Lapid stated.{http://172.16.18.24/viewimage.php?module=big&path=/2024/10/02/&file=pti10_02_2024_000035b.jpg}

Criticism from National Security Minister

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir criticised the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, labelling it as "reckless." He argued that it would negate the war's achievements. Ben-Gvir warned that his party, Otzma Yehudit, would leave the government if the deal proceeds.

In a translated post on X, Ben-Gvir expressed concerns about releasing terrorists and halting hostilities. He stated that this could allow Hamas to rebuild and leave some hostages' fates uncertain. "If this reckless deal is approved and implemented, the Otzma Yehudit party will not be part of the government," he declared.

Impact of Israeli Strikes

Since announcing the ceasefire on Wednesday, Israeli strikes have resulted in 86 deaths and 258 injuries in Gaza. According to Gaza's Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal, this includes 23 children. The death toll following the ceasefire announcement is reportedly the highest in over a week.

The ongoing situation highlights tensions within Israel's political landscape regarding the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. As discussions continue, both domestic political dynamics and humanitarian impacts remain critical considerations for all parties involved.
