Deadly Israeli Strike in Gaza Sparks Fears of Regional Conflict
An Israeli strike in Gaza has killed at least 12 people, mostly children, and raised concerns that the conflict could spread to other parts of the region.
Gaza City, Palestine - An Israeli airstrike on Thursday flattened a home in the southern Gaza Strip, killing at least 12 people, mostly children, in an area designated as a safe zone by the Israeli military. The strike occurred as Israeli troops continued their offensive in the nearby city of Khan Younis.
Escalating Conflict Raises Regional Concerns
The Israeli offensive has focused on Khan Younis, where the military claims to have uncovered tunnels used by Hamas and engaged in battles with militants who attacked southern Israel on October 7. Israel has vowed to continue its campaign until Hamas is eliminated. However, the recent killing of a top Hamas leader in Beirut has raised concerns that the conflict could escalate beyond Gaza.
Mounting Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis
After nearly three months of Israeli bombardment and ground assault, the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory reports that over 22,400 people have been killed in Gaza, with more than two-thirds being women and children. The ministry's count does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The ongoing campaign has displaced over 85% of Gaza's 2.3 million population, with northern Gaza heavily damaged and ground assaults in the south confining most residents to smaller areas.
Nowhere Safe in Gaza
Despite the military's designation of certain areas as safe zones, Palestinians assert that nowhere in Gaza is truly safe due to ongoing strikes. On Thursday, an airstrike hit a house in Mawasi, a rural strip on Gaza's southern coastline, killing a man, his wife, seven of their children, and three other children aged 5 to 14.
Israeli Military's Response
The Israeli military has not yet responded to the incident. In early December, Israeli troops entered Khan Younis and have been engaged in battles with Hamas militants for weeks. The military announced the discovery of a large tunnel, hundreds of meters long, with an entrance near a mosque. Footage released by the military showed the destruction of buildings where fighters had reportedly hidden or where Hamas infrastructure was located.
Blame Game and Ongoing Objectives
Israel holds Hamas responsible for the high civilian death toll, claiming that the militant group operates within residential areas and utilizes an extensive tunnel network beneath civilian sites. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Israel seeks a "clear victory" over Hamas, which has governed Gaza since 2007. However, Israel appears distant from achieving its goals of defeating Hamas and securing the release of approximately 129 hostages held by the group.
Deteriorating Health Situation
The United Nations associate spokesperson, Florencia Soto Niño, reported that officials from the UN's humanitarian office and the World Health Organization visited the Al Amal hospital in Khan Younis, which was reportedly hit by a deadly strike, and observed extensive damage. The UN and its partners have been unable to deliver aid to northern Gaza for three days. Soto Niño warned that Gaza is facing a public health disaster, with over 400,000 cases of infectious diseases reported since October 7, including respiratory infections and diarrhea, particularly affecting children under the age of 5.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with a high civilian death toll and widespread displacement. The international community continues to express concern over the escalating violence and calls for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
