Israel Declares Nationwide Emergency: Tensions Rise As Gaza Conflict Enters 353rd Day
On September 23, 2024, the Israeli government announced a nationwide state of emergency, designated as a "special home front situation," which will remain in effect until September 30.
This declaration comes as Israel's war on Gaza continues for its 353rd day, resulting in the deaths of at least 41,455 Palestinians and injuries to over 95,878 others conservative estimate-while more than 10,000 individuals are believed to be trapped under the rubble of bombed homes.

Escalating Tensions and Military Activity
Air raid sirens were activated in Haifa, prompting residents to seek shelter as the Israeli army reported approximately 180 projectiles and one unmanned aerial vehicle crossing into Israeli airspace from Lebanon. Most projectiles were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system, while others landed in open areas.
In response to the rising violence between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, the United States announced it would deploy additional troops to the Middle East. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed the move but withheld details on the number of troops or their specific missions. The U.S. currently maintains around 40,000 troops in the region. An aircraft carrier, the USS Truman, along with two destroyers and a cruiser, has set sail from Norfolk, Virginia, headed for the Mediterranean, ready to support U.S. forces in case of escalating conflict.
Targeting Hezbollah Infrastructure
Israeli Army Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi stated that Israel's military operations in southern and eastern Lebanon are focused on targeting combat infrastructure developed by Hezbollah over the last two decades. He emphasized that the army is "preparing for the next phases" of its operations.
UN Calls for De-escalation
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed alarm over the increasing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, urging both sides to seek a diplomatic resolution. He voiced serious concern for the civilian casualties reported by Lebanese authorities and highlighted the plight of thousands of displaced individuals amid intensified fighting.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric conveyed Guterres' "grave concern" for the safety of civilians and UN staff, emphasizing that there is no military solution capable of ensuring the safety of either side. The UN chief reiterated the urgent need for de-escalation and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
