Former Iowa Deputy Admits Guilt in Police Dogs Tragic Death
A former Iowa deputy, Dallas Wingate, has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal neglect resulting in the death of a police dog named Bear. Bear was left inside Wingates patrol truck for over 22 hours on a hot day, leading to his tragic demise.

A former Iowa deputy has admitted guilt to a misdemeanour charge after a police dog under his care tragically passed away inside a sweltering police truck. Dallas Wingate, a former sergeant with the Boone County Sheriff's Department, was responsible for the care of a police dog named Bear. In September 2022, investigators discovered that Bear had been left inside Wingate's truck for an extended period of 22 hours.
Plea Agreement and Charges
As part of a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Wingate pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of animal neglect resulting in serious injury or death. Consequently, a more severe felony charge was dropped. The plea agreement proposes an 18-month probationary period and a fine of USD 855.
Discovery of Bear's Death
The tragic incident came to light on the evening of September 2, 2022, when Wingate discovered Bear deceased inside the truck. According to documents related to a search warrant, Wingate stated that he had placed Bear in the truck around 10 pm on September 1 because the dog was barking at a deer. However, he regrettably forgot about Bear until the following evening when he went to feed his other dogs and noticed Bear's absence.
Extreme Temperatures and Consequences
On the day of the incident, the temperature reached a high of 89 degrees Fahrenheit (31.7 degrees Celsius), causing the temperature inside the truck to soar well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 degrees Celsius). These extreme temperatures proved fatal for Bear.
Following the dog's death, Wingate was placed on administrative leave and subsequently resigned from his position on September 8, 2022. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting animal welfare.
