Indiana Man Antony Vo Arrested in Canada After Fleeing Prison Sentence for Capitol Riot
An Indiana man, Antony Vo, was apprehended in Canada on the fourth anniversary of the US Capitol riot. Vo had fled to avoid a nine-month prison sentence for his involvement in the January 6 attack. He was arrested "without incident" in Whistler, British Columbia, as confirmed by Canada Border Services Agency spokesperson Rebecca Purdy. Vo remains in custody, according to his immigration lawyer.

Over 1,500 individuals have faced charges related to the Capitol riot. Vo is among more than 700 defendants sentenced to imprisonment for their roles in the event. Despite being ordered by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan to report to prison on June 14, Vo defied the court order. Since then, he has been active on social media, discussing his case and promoting conspiracy theories about January 6.
Vo's Social Media Activity
Vo has not kept a low profile since absconding. He has given interviews and expressed confidence that President-elect Donald Trump will pardon him later this month. On social media, he criticised Judge Chutkan, claiming wrongful conviction by a "kangaroo court." In December, he posted, "My entire family hated Chutkan! It's like we could sense the commie in her."
Vo is seeking political asylum in Canada with assistance from a Saskatchewan-based immigration attorney. He told The Toronto Sun he is "pretty much 99 per cent sure" Trump will pardon him once he takes office on January 20. Trump has promised to pardon Capitol rioters on his first day back in the White House, calling them "political prisoners" and "hostages."
Legal Proceedings and Asylum Claim
Oluwadamilola Asuni, Vo's immigration attorney, expects him to remain in Canadian custody until a detention review hearing next Wednesday in British Columbia. Purdy stated that there is no record of Vo entering Canada through any official port of entry. His arrest was based on a warrant issued under an immigration law.
In 2024, over 14,000 foreign nationals were removed from Canada for violating similar laws. Defense attorney Carmen Hernandez, representing Vo in his January 6 case, learned of his arrest through news reports. "All I can say is that I have not heard from him since he was arrested," Hernandez said.
Vo entered the Capitol with his mother after traveling from Bloomington, Indiana, to attend Trump's "Stop the Steal" rally near the White House four years ago. A photo captured Vo standing next to his mother, Annie Vo, in the Capitol's Rotunda with a flag raised above his head.
Conviction and Sentencing
A jury convicted Vo of four misdemeanors following a trial in September 2023. During sentencing, Vo expressed regret for his actions on January 6. According to a transcript of the hearing, he stated, "I know I shouldn't have been there that day." Judge Chutkan noted Vo's apparent lack of respect for the court and warned that failing to report to prison could lead to additional charges.
"He apparently has a different view of the Constitution and a different view of the seriousness of his actions," Judge Chutkan remarked during sentencing. She emphasized that while he is entitled to his views, he is being sentenced for his actions.
Annie Vo's jury trial is scheduled for March 10.
