India and Australia Officially Launch Renewable Energy Partnership to Boost Investment in Renewables

India and Australia have officially launched the Renewable Energy Partnership to enhance mutual investment in renewable sectors. This development was announced during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The leaders also discussed advancing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across various fields, including trade, defence, and education.

Renewable Energy Focus

The Renewable Energy Partnership aims to facilitate cooperation in solar PV, green hydrogen, and energy storage. It will also focus on two-way investment in renewable projects and skill development for the future workforce. "Our renewable energy partnership is officially launched," Albanese stated, highlighting its potential to boost investment in these sectors.

Both leaders expressed their commitment to accelerating climate action by leveraging their complementary capabilities. The joint statement emphasised the importance of practical cooperation in priority areas to meet net zero targets. "We are doing so much work together on driving renewable energy transition," Albanese added.

Defence and Security Cooperation

The summit also underscored progress in defence and security under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both countries aim to renew their Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation by 2025. This renewal seeks to reflect their growing strategic convergence and ambition in defence collaboration.

Modi and Albanese agreed on enhancing maritime domain awareness and reciprocal defence information-sharing. They aim to deepen operational cooperation, address shared challenges, and promote a peaceful Indo-Pacific region. "We have been working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity," Modi noted.

Maritime Security Initiatives

The leaders agreed to develop a joint maritime security collaboration roadmap. They plan to continue aircraft deployments from each other's territories to build operational familiarity. This initiative aligns with their commitment to an open, inclusive Indo-Pacific where sovereignty is respected.

Regional cooperation was another focal point of the discussions. Both leaders reiterated support for international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). They stressed the importance of exercising rights and freedoms in all seas and oceans.

Community Engagement

Prime Minister Modi highlighted assurances from Albanese regarding the Indian community's interests in Australia. This includes Indian students who form a significant cohort of foreign-born students there. The opening of new consulates in Bengaluru and Brisbane was welcomed as a step towards strengthening trade relations and cultural links.

According to the High Commission of India in Canberra, about 9,76,000 people in Australia trace Indian ancestry as per the 2021 census. The Indian diaspora is noted as the second largest and fastest-growing group in Australia. These developments are expected to deepen ties between both nations further.

The summit concluded with both leaders expressing optimism about future collaborations across various sectors. They remain committed to fostering strong bilateral relations that benefit both countries economically and culturally.
