Harris Claims Trump Will Sign National Abortion Ban; Trump Denies As "Lie"

In a highly charged debate on Tuesday evening, the stage was set for a fiery exchange between two of America's most prominent political figures-US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. With the nation watching closely, the topic turned to one of the most contentious issues in American politics: abortion.

Kamala Harris, known for her strong stance on women's rights and reproductive health, took the floor with confidence. She claimed that if Donald Trump were to win the upcoming presidential polls, he would push through a national abortion ban, significantly restricting women's rights across the country. "He will take us backward," Harris said. "A national abortion ban is on his agenda, and every American woman should be aware of that."

Harris Claims Trump Will Sign National Abortion Ban Trump Denies As Lie

Trump, who has often been ambiguous about his stance on abortion, was quick to interject. "That's a lie," he retorted.

"I have never said I would implement a national ban."

Kamala Harris then said, "Donald Trump hand-selected three members of the Supreme Court with the intention that they would undo the protections of Roe v. Wade-and they did exactly as he intended. And now, in over 20 states, there are Trump abortion bans..."

Key Election Issue

Abortion is expected to be a key issue influencing voters' decisions in the upcoming November election, marking the first presidential contest since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, which led 22 states to impose restrictions on abortion access. As the 2024 election approaches, presidential nominees Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have each laid out their positions on abortion, offering contrasting visions for the future of abortion rights in the U.S. if elected.

Democrats are counting on the issue of abortion access to mobilize voters in support of Harris, while Republicans argue that abortion should be regulated at the state level. However, they are facing increasing scrutiny over whether a national abortion ban would be pursued if Trump secures a second term.

Throughout his campaign, Trump has been inconsistent on the issue of abortion, causing frustration among social conservatives and anti-abortion groups advocating for a nationwide ban. He has repeatedly credited himself for the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022, highlighting that three of the justices he appointed played a pivotal role in ending the federal constitutional right to abortion.

In contrast, Harris has centered her campaign on defending abortion rights, linking the restrictions imposed in over 20 states to the Republican nominee by referring to them as "Trump abortion bans" in her campaign speeches.

During her keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, where she accepted the party's presidential nomination, Harris pledged to sign into law a bill that would restore the federal right to abortion, should such legislation be passed by Congress.
