Gunmen in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Leave 8 Dead and 8 Injured as Violence Escalates

In a distressing surge of violence that has gripped Ecuador, a coastal city witnessed a harrowing incident where armed gunmen launched an attack, resulting in eight fatalities and eight injuries. The Interior Ministry disclosed that this tragic event unfolded in Guayaquil's Guasmo neighbourhood around 7 pm local time on Saturday. According to eyewitness accounts, assailants arrived in a vehicle and opened fire on a group of individuals, instantly claiming two lives. The severity of injuries led to six more succumbing at a health center.

Guayaquil Attack: 8 Dead, 8 Injured

This recent outbreak of violence marks the second mass killing within a span of two days in Ecuador. A preceding episode involved the execution-style killing of five individuals, believed to be tourists entangled in a drug-trafficking conflict, in the coastal province of Manabi on Friday. An armed faction had abducted 11 people in this incident, with police managing to rescue six, including five minors. Authorities have apprehended two suspects in connection with these killings.

Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa took to the social media network X to express his determination against narcoterrorism, stating that such forces seeking to instill fear would not prevail. His message was accompanied by a video showcasing the arrest of an individual linked to these violent acts.

The country, once celebrated for its tranquility, has been facing an alarming increase in violent incidents. In response to the escalating crisis, President Noboa declared a state of emergency in January, enabling continuous security operations by combined police and military forces. Additionally, a five-hour curfew has been implemented in areas with high incidences of violence, including Guayaquil.

Further illustrating the gravity of the situation, on March 24, Brigitte Garcia, the 27-year-old mayor of a small town in Manabi province, along with her collaborator Jairo Loor, were found deceased with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Moreover, a riot within a Guayaquil prison under military and police jurisdiction resulted in three inmate deaths and four injuries on Thursday.

Ecuador's struggle with violence is underscored by its surpassing a rate of 40 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants at the end of 2023, positioning it among the highest in Latin America for such incidents. This wave of violence underscores the challenges facing Ecuador as it battles against narcoterrorism and seeks to restore peace within its borders.
