Gov. Andy Beshear Endorses Kamala Harris, Highlights Kentucky's Progress

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear recently discussed his conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now the leading candidate for the Democratic presidential ticket. Beshear stated that Kentucky's progress should serve as a national example amid speculation about his potential role in the upcoming election. He also criticised former President Donald Trump's tenure and Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump's new running mate.

Beshear Backs Harris for President

Beshear, who recently returned from an economic trip to Japan and South Korea, mentioned that Harris called him shortly after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection. "That meant a lot to me, to reach out to me personally and ask for my support," Beshear said. "I pledged my support to her. The rest of that conversation I said would stay between us. We have a trust in where we're able to exchange ideas and give advice."

Focus on Core Issues

Beshear emphasised that Democrats should address everyday concerns of Americans, such as jobs, healthcare, schools, and public safety, to improve their standing in rural areas. "What Democrats have to do is focus on people's concerns when they wake up in the morning," he said. "Concerns that really aren't partisan, though everything is made partisan right now."

During his tenure as governor, Beshear has mostly refrained from criticising Trump, who won Kentucky in both 2016 and 2020. However, when asked about Trump's legacy, Beshear said it was one of division. "Listen, I worked with him and I was able to work with him," the governor said. "He and his administration took my calls and I'm grateful for that. But turning people against each other is wrong. It violates my faith, which espouses the Golden Rule that we love our neighbour as ourselves."

Economic Development Achievements

Beshear highlighted Kentucky's record-setting economic development projects during his time in office. "I certainly think what we've done here in Kentucky is something that should be a model for the country," he said. "Not just in winning but in governing. How at a time when the country is at a boiling point, with neighbours yelling at neighbours, we've turned down the temperature here."

Despite Republican dominance in Kentucky's legislature, Beshear has claimed credit for economic gains that Republicans attribute to their business-friendly policies. In his reelection campaign last year, Beshear managed to win several rural counties that are typically Trump strongholds.

Criticism of JD Vance

Beshear did not hold back when discussing JD Vance, who recently became Trump's running mate. Vance built his recent speech at the Republican National Convention around his Appalachian roots. "You don't get to just come in eastern Kentucky a couple of times in the summer and then maybe for weddings and a funeral and cast judgment on us," Beshear said Monday. "It's offensive."

Vance rose to prominence with his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which many believed captured Trump's appeal in rural white America affected by joblessness and opioid addiction. However, Appalachian scholars criticised the book for perpetuating stereotypes and blaming working-class people for their struggles without acknowledging exploitation by coal and pharmaceutical companies.

Beshear also noted that Harris has become familiar with his family over several meetings in recent years. "She's gotten to know my kids and always asks about them by name, which is an easy way to get to my heart," Beshear said during an interview with The Associated Press at the Kentucky governor's mansion.

When asked if he was interested in a vice-presidential bid, Beshear reiterated his commitment to serving out his second term as governor unless an opportunity arose that would benefit Kentuckians more significantly. "The only way that wouldn't happen is if I have an opportunity to help Kentuckians in a different way that would bring additional value," he said.

Beshear's remarks reflect his ongoing commitment to addressing core issues affecting Americans while highlighting Kentucky's achievements under his leadership as a potential model for national governance.
