France Condemns Israeli Police Detention of Consulate Staff at Jerusalem Church

Israeli police forcibly entered a French-owned church compound in Jerusalem, briefly detaining two French consulate employees. This incident led to the cancellation of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot's visit to the site. The French Foreign Ministry plans to summon the Israeli ambassador in protest, as tensions between Israel and France have been rising following recent diplomatic disagreements.

France Protests Israeli Police Actions in Jerusalem

The Church of the Pater Noster, located on the Mount of Olives, was the focal point of this incident. The site is historically significant, believed to be where Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer. It was acquired by Princess Héloïse de la Tour d'Auvergne and entrusted to French Carmelite nuns in 1874. The compound holds religious and cultural importance for France.

French Diplomatic Concerns

Barrot expressed his discontent with the incident, stating, "This attack on the integrity of a domain placed under the responsibility of France is likely to weaken the bonds I have, in fact, come to cultivate with Israel at a time when we all need to make progress in the region on the road to peace." He was in Jerusalem for meetings with Israeli officials and urged for a ceasefire in Gaza and a diplomatic resolution in Lebanon.

The French Foreign Ministry condemned the actions of Israeli security forces, describing them as unacceptable. The ministry emphasized that these events occurred while France was actively working towards reducing violence in the region. The ministry also highlighted that Barrot's intervention led to the release of the detained consulate employees.

Israeli Police's Perspective

Israeli police described the situation as a misunderstanding. They claimed that two church workers refused entry to security guards accompanying Barrot because they did not identify themselves. The workers were detained for about 20 minutes before being released after confirming their identities as consulate employees. Israeli police stressed that foreign ministers visiting Israel are assigned security guards.

This incident is reminiscent of past tensions between French officials and Israeli security personnel. In 2020, President Macron had a confrontation with Israeli officers at another French church in Jerusalem. Similarly, in 1996, then-President Jacques Chirac had a dispute with Israeli forces, leading to an apology from Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Historical Context and Ongoing Tensions

Jerusalem remains one of the most contested areas globally. Israel considers it its "unified, eternal" capital since capturing East Jerusalem during the 1967 Mideast war. However, Palestinians view East Jerusalem as their future capital. Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem is not internationally recognized.

Since Hamas attacks on Israel over a year ago, President Macron has supported Israel's right to self-defense but has urged caution regarding civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon. Barrot plans further discussions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.

This incident adds another layer to the complex relationship between France and Israel, highlighting ongoing diplomatic challenges amidst regional conflicts.
