Ford Foundation's Darren Walker Announces 2025 Departure, Ending Influential Tenure
Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation, is set to step down by the end of 2025. Walker, 64, has been recognised as one of Rolling Stone's "25 People Shaping the Future" and Time's "100 Most Influential People." He has led the foundation since 2013.

Francisco Cigarroa, Ford Foundation board chair, announced that a search committee has been formed to find Walker's successor. "Walker has guided Ford through some of the most challenging moments of our time with grace, kindness, and empathy," Cigarroa stated. He added that Walker's tenure will be remembered as one of the most consequential periods in the institution's nearly 90-year history.
Impact on Philanthropy
Walker, a former corporate attorney and chief operating officer of the Harlem-based Abyssinian Development Corporation, has overseen significant investments in gender equity and disability rights. He also focused on examining the impact of new technologies and leveraging the foundation's assets for greater impact.
In a 2021 interview with The Associated Press, Walker often cited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said, "philanthropy is commendable, but it should not allow the philanthropist to overlook the economic injustice that makes philanthropy necessary." This quote encapsulates Walker's approach to philanthropy.
Latanya Mapp, president and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, described Walker as an "icon" and "a beacon for how to lead authentically in the struggle for social justice in a changing world." She noted that Walker had previously served on RPAs board.
Social Justice and Financial Innovation
Former President Barack Obama told The New York Times that Walker has devoted his career to social justice, human rights, and reducing inequality worldwide. Obama added that Walker has inspired countless organisations and individuals to follow suit.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Walker advocated for leveraging Ford's endowment to issue a social bond. The board approved a $1 billion bond issuance, which was quickly taken up by socially-conscious investors. The foundation distributed these funds over two years to its grantees, with most going to organisations led by people of colour.
This move by Ford Foundation set a precedent that other foundations followed. It helped stabilise nonprofits and strengthened the racial justice movement that gained momentum after George Floyd's murder.
Personal Background and Leadership Style
A gay Black man who grew up in poverty in rural Texas, Walker brings a unique perspective to his role at the Ford Foundation. Mapp called him incredibly humble and noted that he speaks about community issues without centring his own experiences. "He centres the communities themselves and the stories of the people who are going through many of today's challenges," she said.
The Ford Foundation, with an endowment of $16 billion, is one of the largest philanthropic foundations in the United States. It was established with wealth from the Ford family, who made their fortune through Ford Motor Co.
Walker’s leadership has left an indelible mark on philanthropy. His efforts have not only advanced social justice but also inspired other organisations to take meaningful action. As he prepares to exit his role, his legacy will continue to influence future philanthropic endeavours.
