Finance Minister Kaag Underscores Crucial Role of COP28 in Climate Financing
In a recent interview, Netherlands Finance Minister Sigrid Kaag highlighted the importance of COP28 in securing funding for climate change projects. Kaag emphasized the need for financial commitment and collaboration in the global fight against climate change and underscored the significance of the COP28 platform in this endeavor. She also touched upon the importance of the Finance Day at COP28 and the role of the private sector in funding climate change initiatives.
On 6th December 2023, Sigrid Kaag, the Finance Minister of the Netherlands, emphasized the critical role of COP28 in marshalling the requisite funding for climate-oriented projects, with a vision of "moving from millions to trillions". She expressed these views in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), conducted on the margins of the COP28 meeting.
The Importance of COP28
Kaag underscored the significance of COP28, not just because of the mounting scientific evidence of climate change's impact but also as a historical juncture where it is still feasible to reverse the course, despite significant delays in meeting the set objectives and targets. "This COP is extremely important, given the data and the science we have concerning the impact of climate change. It is a historical moment where we can still flip the script, even though we've fallen behind in meeting our goals and targets," she stated.
Kaag highlighted the strong political commitment and the technical expertise available, with all stakeholders on board.

Finance Day at COP28
She also emphasized the importance of the Finance Day, which was part of the COP28 schedule. She explained that while innovative ideas, technology, and planning at a national level are all essential, without the necessary funding, nothing can be achieved. Kaag said, "Finance Day is a significant event at COP28 because, while we can have the best ideas, discuss innovation, technology, and country planning, without money, it's all just talk."
She stressed the need for public funding and innovative finance, along with a well-defined role and expectations for the private sector, which she noted, is very much willing to participate.
Loss and Damage Fund
Additionally, Kaag lauded the UAE and the COP28 presidency for making substantial headway on the Loss and Damage Fund on the event's first day. "It sends a potent message about the expectations and ambitions for this round of COP28 negotiations," she said.
She observed that while climate change inflicts significant losses, those most affected by its consequences are often not the ones who caused them.
Call to Action
The Dutch Finance Minister urged all stakeholders to ramp up their efforts to cut carbon dioxide emissions and to facilitate the transition to cleaner energy sources. In conclusion, Kaag's comments underscore the importance of financial commitment and collaboration in the global fight against climate change. With the COP28 platform, she believes that big strides can be made in securing the necessary funding and political will to move forward.
