Explained: Why Did Benny Gantz, Chairman Of Israel's National Unity Party Resign From Israel's War Cabinet?
With the Israel-Hamas war continuing into its ninth month and international pressure mounting on the Benjamin Netanyahu government to implement a ceasefire, a resignation has been tendered by war cabinet member Benny Gantz.
The National Unity party, chaired by centrist leader Gantz, had seen his inclusion in the war cabinet following the October 7 attack by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, which led to an Israeli invasion of Gaza.

Benny Gantz Resigns, But Why
Upon announcing his resignation, accusations were levelled against Netanyahu by Gantz for preventing Israel from achieving a "true victory" in its ongoing conflict with Hamas. Gantz, who had faced pressure to remain in the Netanyahu government to serve as a counterbalance to the ruling far-right factions, had earlier demanded that an agreed-upon strategy to conclude the Gaza war be accepted by the Israeli prime minister by June 8. This demand was not fulfilled, as reported by CNN.
It was stated by Gantz in a televised address on Sunday that, in response to the October 7 events, he and his colleagues had, like hundreds of thousands of patriotic Israelis, mobilized and joined the coalition despite recognizing it as an unfavourable government. "Netanyahu prevents us from moving forward to a real victory [in Gaza]," Gantz declared. "This is why the emergency government is being exited today with a heavy heart but with a whole heart," he added.
Gantz Accuses Netanyahu of Prioritizing Political Interests Over National Victory
In his statement, Gantz, who had been seen as a significant contender against Netanyahu, noted that his departure was being made eight months after the October 7 Hamas attacks due to the changed circumstances within the country and the decision-making framework.
Further accusations were directed at the Israeli prime minister by Gantz, alleging that Netanyahu had placed personal political considerations above a strategic plan for Gaza post-conflict. Gantz asserted that critical strategic decisions were being met with hesitation and delay due to political motives and called for Netanyahu to schedule elections in the coming months, as reported by CNN.
"I call on Netanyahu: set an agreed election date. Do not let our people be torn apart," Gantz urged. An ultimatum had been given by Gantz last month for the Netanyahu administration to present a new plan for the Gaza conflict by June 8.
Netanyahu Responds: "This Is Not the Time"
Despite frequent appeals from Netanyahu for Gantz to stay within the emergency government and calls for unity, the resignation was moved forward by Gantz. Netanyahu, following the resignation announcement, encouraged Gantz to reconsider his decision.
"Benny, this is not the time to abandon the campaign - this is the time to unite," Netanyahu said to Gantz in a post on X. "Citizens of Israel, we will continue until victory and until all the goals of the war are achieved, particularly the release of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas," he added.
Netanyahu stated that his door would remain open to any political party prepared to share the responsibilities of fighting against Hamas. It was noted that Gantz's resignation did not immediately threaten Netanyahu's government.
Reasons for and Implications of Gantz's Resignation
Gantz's resignation highlights three key areas of impact: the functioning of the Israeli government, the conduct of the war against Hamas, and Gantz's political prospects.
The National Unity party, led by Gantz, had not been part of the prime minister's coalition, which maintains a majority with 64 seats in the 120-member Knesset. However, Gantz's resignation leaves the war cabinet without representation from parties outside of Netanyahu's Likud, as per Times Of Israel.
Therefore, the resignation of Gantz did not collapse the government but did create a skewed composition in the war cabinet. Negotiations for a hostage deal are made simpler with only one party involved, and Netanyahu could potentially remain in office until the next scheduled elections in October 2026. Opinion polls, however, indicate that an election held this year would likely result in a victory for Gantz, as per media reports.
From the Palestinian perspective, the absence of Gantz implies that the situation will, at best, not deteriorate further. Despite Gantz's "moderate" stance, which rarely resulted in leniency towards Hamas or in a decrease in Palestinian casualties, his departure, along with Netanyahu's steadfast goals, reduces the likelihood of a timely resolution to hostage negotiations.
