Muhammad Yunus Calls for Global Engagement with New Bangladesh Emphasising Democracy and Multilateralism

Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, has called on the global community to engage with Bangladesh in a new light. Speaking at the 79th UN General Assembly session, Yunus highlighted the country's commitment to fostering friendly relations with all nations based on mutual respect and shared interests. His address marked a significant moment following Bangladesh's recent political changes.

Yunus Urges Global Community to Engage with Bangladesh

Yunus, an 84-year-old Nobel laureate, assumed leadership of Bangladesh's interim government in August. This transition followed weeks of protests that led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has since sought refuge in India. Yunus emphasised the role of ordinary citizens, particularly the youth, in driving this change.

Commitment to Multilateralism

In his speech, Yunus assured that Bangladesh would adhere to international agreements and continue advocating for multilateralism with the UN at its core. He reiterated the nation's openness to nurturing relationships with all countries while upholding dignity and pride. This approach aims to realise freedom and democracy beyond mere words.

The recent political upheaval in Bangladesh was driven by a movement initially focused on ending discrimination. Over time, it evolved into a broader people's movement against autocracy and corruption. Yunus noted that this uprising resulted in over 800 martyrs but ultimately led to significant political change.

Challenges and Reforms

Yunus described his shock upon discovering widespread corruption and politicisation within key institutions upon taking office. He highlighted how public resources were mismanaged and wealth concentrated among a select few. Under such circumstances, he was tasked with rebuilding Bangladesh into a competitive economy and just society.

He stressed that Bangladesh's youth played a crucial role in gaining independence from an autocratic regime. This collective resolve should shape the nation's future as a responsible member of the international community. The movement reflects values rooted in liberalism, pluralism, and secularism.

Engagement with Global Leaders

During his visit to New York for the UNGA week, Yunus engaged in bilateral discussions with several key leaders. These included US President Joe Biden, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Such interactions underscore Bangladesh's commitment to strengthening international ties.

Yunus also met with leaders like Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. These meetings aimed at fostering cooperation on various fronts. Additionally, discussions with financial leaders like IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva highlighted economic priorities.

The recent developments in Bangladesh have prompted reflection on the values that led to its creation during the 1971 Liberation War. Yunus noted that Generation Z is revisiting these ideals as they strive for justice and equality. This generational shift is seen as pivotal for shaping Bangladesh's future trajectory.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain in New York. Their conversation focused on strengthening bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh. This meeting highlights ongoing efforts to maintain strong regional partnerships amid changing political landscapes.
