Elon Musk, the billionaire behind SpaceX and Tesla, has reportedly been in frequent contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the past two years. This information was revealed by The Wall Street Journal, citing an anonymous source familiar with the situation. The source confirmed that Musk and Putin have communicated via phone calls but did not provide specifics on the frequency or content of these discussions.

Musk's interactions with Putin have sparked concerns about national security due to his companies' significant government contracts. SpaceX, a major partner for NASA and other government satellite projects, is particularly noteworthy. Ben Friedman from Defence Priorities highlighted the potential risks, stating that private talks with Putin could be indiscreet and harmful to Musk's business interests.

The discussions between Musk and Putin reportedly covered personal topics as well as business and geopolitical issues. According to The Journal, during one conversation, Putin requested Musk not to activate his Starlink satellite system over Taiwan as a favour to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Peskov described it as an introductory call and denied any further contact between them. He attributed the report to political motives during the election period.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian military intelligence declined to comment on the alleged communications between Musk and Putin. The CIA, Pentagon, and National Security Council also refrained from commenting on the matter.

Musk's shifting stance on Ukraine adds another layer of complexity. Initially supportive of Kyiv after Russia's 2022 invasion, he later refused to allow Ukraine to use Starlink for an attack on Russian forces in Crimea.
