Cop28: UN Chief Sultan al-Jaber Confirms 2023 As Hottest Year In History

Leaders from around the world started to gather in UAE's Dubai to participate in the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and churn over the measures that can be taken to prevent drastic changes. As per the reports, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK PM Rishi Sunak, US Vice President Kamala Harris and, King Charles III are likely to participate in the conference till December 12.

The Conference on Climate Change started with a rousing speech by COP28 president Sultan al-Jaber. In his speech, Al-Jaber wooed the participant countries to cut down on emissions, triple renewable power capacity, and double energy efficiency, stating as the key goals of the UAE as hosts.

In reference to some big oil and gas companies, Al-Jaber stated that big players are poised to commit to reducing methane emissions to zero by 2030. "would unlock finance to ensure the global south does not have to choose between development and climate action," the CNN quoted COP28 president.

Notably, this year has been marked as "virtually certain" which crossed the global temperature record, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

The UAE's biggest target is to get a treble signed by the world leaders to opt more for renewable energy. The agreement to participate in saving the climate has already been signed by the US, China, and other G20 countries.

The UN body's chief and Finnish meteorologist, Petteri Taalas, in his provisional State of the Climate report, said "It's a deafening cacophony of broken records." "Greenhouse gas levels are record high. Global temperatures are at record high. Sea level rise is record high. Antarctic sea ice is recording low," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the summit on November 30 and December 1, 2023.
