China Urges A Swift Return To Stability In Syria After Rebel Forces Capture Damascus
In the wake of Islamist-led rebels seizing control of Damascus and the reported flight of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, China has voiced its concerns and called for a swift return to stability in the region. The statement comes as the situation in Syria undergoes a dramatic transformation, leaving the global community closely monitoring developments, as reported by Firstpost.

China's Official Stance
The Chinese foreign ministry issued a statement on Sunday expressing hopes that Syria would “return to stability as soon as possible.” Acknowledging the volatility of the current situation, the ministry emphasized the importance of safeguarding Chinese citizens and institutions in the country.
"The Chinese government has actively assisted Chinese citizens willing to leave Syria safely and has maintained communication with those who remain in the country," the ministry stated. It also urged all Syrian parties to implement measures ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and diplomatic missions, as reported by Firstpost.
Embassy Operations Continue
Despite the turmoil, Beijing confirmed that its embassy in Damascus continues to function. The Chinese government has pledged full support to its citizens in Syria, underscoring its commitment to maintaining a diplomatic presence in the war-torn region.
China's Evolving Role in Syria
While Russia and Iran have been Syria’s most prominent allies during its years-long conflict, China has quietly expanded its ties with the Assad regime. Notably, President Bashar al-Assad visited China in 2023, marking one of his few international trips since the onset of Syria's civil war in 2011. During the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Assad announced a “strategic partnership,” strengthening Beijing’s involvement in the region, as per media reports.
China’s investments in Syria have included reconstruction projects and diplomatic engagements, positioning it as an emerging player in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
Global Reactions to the Crisis
The rebel takeover of Damascus has sent shockwaves across the international community. While China has adopted a cautious and pragmatic stance, emphasizing stability and citizen safety, other nations, including Russia and Iran, have yet to issue official responses.
As Syria enters an uncertain chapter, Beijing's measured response reflects its broader foreign policy goals of promoting stability while safeguarding its strategic interests in the region. The coming days will reveal how China, alongside other global powers, navigates the fallout from Syria's rapidly evolving political landscape.
