Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently engaged in discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. This meeting marked their first encounter since Pezeshkian assumed the presidency in July 2024. India and Iran, sharing deep-rooted civilisational connections, are pivotal trade partners with overlapping economic and security interests.

India-Iran Relations

In January 2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Iran for the first time since its BRICS membership in September 2023. During his visit, he met with Iran's Foreign Minister Dr Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Their discussions covered various topics such as the Chabahar port, regional stability, and global issues including the Gaza situation and Afghanistan's security.

Earlier this month, India voiced concerns over escalating tensions in West Asia. The country urged all parties to exercise restraint and protect civilians. In April 2024, India expressed serious concern over hostilities between Israel and Iran, urging immediate de-escalation and a return to diplomacy.

Modi-Putin Meeting

During the summit, PM Modi also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The leaders exchanged a warm hug, highlighting their strong personal rapport. Putin remarked on their close relationship by stating that no translation was needed between them. Modi emphasised their deep friendship and noted his frequent visits to Russia as a testament to their cooperation.

"My two visits to Russia in the last three months reflect our close coordination and deep friendship," PM Modi stated. He added that their Annual Summit in Moscow had further strengthened bilateral ties across various fields. Modi also expressed enthusiasm for participating in the upcoming BRICS Summit.

Kazan is currently hosting the 16th BRICS Summit, marking PM Modi's second visit to Russia this year and his seventh over the past decade. The summit underscores India's active engagement with BRICS nations and its commitment to fostering international cooperation on pressing global issues.
