Boosting Cyprus Defence Capacity is Essential Amid Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Enhancing Cyprus' defence capabilities is crucial for the island, given its proximity to the conflict-ridden Middle East, according to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas. He emphasised the importance of acquiring advanced defence systems. Speaking in Nicosia, Palmas shared some defence strategies but refrained from detailing specific arms procurement plans.

Enhancing Cyprus Defence Amid Regional Tensions

The eastern Mediterranean's shifting geostrategic dynamics and competing interests necessitate strengthening Cyprus' defensive capabilities, Palmas stated. A senior government official disclosed that Cyprus recently acquired part of the Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system. The official, who requested anonymity, anticipates the system's full delivery soon and expects it to be operational by mid-2025.

Defence System Upgrades

The Israeli Barak MX system can intercept missiles, drones, and aircraft from 150 kilometres away. This represents a significant upgrade for Cyprus, which previously relied on Soviet-era weapons like the BUK M1-2 missile system. In recent years, Cyprus has shifted away from Russian weaponry as part of a strategy to align its military with EU and NATO standards.

President Nikos Christodoulides mentioned that Cyprus might consider applying to join NATO with US assistance when conditions are favourable. Closer ties with the US have allowed Cyprus to leverage its location as the nearest EU member to the Middle East for diplomatic outreach and humanitarian efforts.

Humanitarian Efforts and Military Developments

Earlier this year, Cyprus facilitated the shipment of 20,000 tons of humanitarian aid directly to Gaza via a maritime corridor. Although this effort paused due to escalating conflict, plans are underway to resume it through Israel's Ashdod port. Strengthened US relations led to lifting a long-standing arms embargo on Cyprus, imposed by Washington to prevent an arms race.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 following Turkey's invasion after a coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece. Turkey still maintains over 35,000 troops in northern Cyprus. After the US embargo lift, Cyprus' elite underwater demolition teams received modern US-made M5 carbines suitable for special warfare operations.

Infrastructure Enhancements

Palmas also revealed ongoing work to expand an air base in southwest Cyprus, including extending its runway. Additionally, significant upgrades are planned for the Mari naval base on the southern coast. These enhancements aim to accommodate warships and submarines from allied and friendly nations.

Cyprus continues to strengthen its defence posture amid regional tensions and evolving geopolitical landscapes. The island nation seeks to balance its strategic alliances while enhancing its military capabilities through modernisation and international cooperation.
